Footage from an HV20/30 will play nicely will all formats shot on an A1(S). Even 24p if you are going for that film look. If you stick with 60i on the A1, especially since your editing with FCE 3.5, any HDV camera or tape deck will read your footage with no problem.

Finding a consumer camera that has both tape and HDD recording may be hard to find. The awesome Panasonic AG-HVX200 records onto HDD and MiniDV, but only SD on tape, even you are shooting 1080p on P2 cards. Kind of annoying, but at least it is some sort of backup.

From what I've read on Canon's website, there really isn't a major advantage of the XH A1S over the A1. Maybe the HDD recording capability, but I just got a brand new A1 and can't afford to sell it and buy an A1S. Unless you are looking for an A1 with less than 1 hour on the heads. :D

I found a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable on monoprice.com for ~$7. As long as the cable is "bilingual" there shouldn't be a problem. At least that's what the IEEE 1394 standard says.

I would LOVE to drop the coin on a Mac Pro, but it may be a bit out of my range for now. Maybe looking at them some more will help as the Mac Pro and the 17" MacBook Pro start at $2799. Maybe a Mac Pro is in my future after all... more thought to be done on this.

The a la carte option is one that I am all for, but really, I would want to take it a couple steps further. Why not a la carte the shows that you want to watch? I know that I don't watch every show on a given channel, so there is still some money wasted there.

My idea is that you have an HTPC that acts very much like your current cable or satellite box. You go through the list of shows, pay for them, download them, and watch them when you feel like it. You don't pay a monthly subscription, you just pay for the show you want to watch. The system could be set up where you rent the shows for a small price, but only get one or two viewings before it gets deleted.

There could be huge potential here.

I am now using this on my WP blog. The setup was easy peasy, but now my Add New Comment header is ginormous. Oh well, doesn't look too bad.
