Oh, and to be perfectly clear I never saw Medsker in mascara back in school, although it wouldn't surprise me if he did rock it, ha! Reason I typed "big tough dudes LIKE Medsker" is because I remember the "Cure Clique" from my dorm, and a couple of them were tall like him. I remember how ridiculous they looked in mascara, but looking back on it, hey -- many of us did many odd things in pursuit of companionship when in college, no?

Throw out the chart discussions, the Cure was a curious phenomenon; they had little commercial success until the end but nonetheless hugely popular at colleges...with the ladies. What a trick they played: Getting guys -- even big tough dudes like Medsker -- to wear mascara in order to get laid, a phenomena that repeating itself all across the land. Ben Folds even joked about it in "Battle of Who Could Care Less":

and you're all dressed up like the Cure

The Cure cut I remember played all the flipping time (before they sold out and got popular hahahaha) because the chicks dug it was "Just Like Heaven." Dorms, clubs, everywhere. Guys had to fake that you liked it before they could bust out "Let's Go To Bed" and make your play. That latter cut, if you played it at the wrong time, could be a disaster.

Fair enough. I was thinking of the musicians themselves, I guess, specifically a lot of the indie artists of the 1980s and early 1990s when I wrote that comment.

You're going back further, talking about the infrastructure...and I agree with your points. I was sort of hinting at what you're saying in the above piece -- not disparaging DiNizio's homebrew solo material, but rather appreciating Dixon's interpretation of the ensemble sound. It *is* much better.

I get what you're saying but when was it not a hobby? When was it not an era when the fat cat executives (read Hit Men?) were making the money and the artists ended up mostly poor...except for the KISS's and Michael Boltons and Pearl Jams of the world? Just sayin'...it's BECOMING a hobby? When was it not? Some idealized Monterey Pop/Woodstock fantasy you were sold by VH1?

SMITHEREENS RULE!! I'm with you on sonic youth. I love Dirty's "Sugar Kane" and "Theresa's Sound World" and a couple other cuts but on the whole, I just don't get it. And not for trying. In fact I had a music inferiority complex for a while that I didn't. They day I just said "screw Sonic Youth, I never HAVE to like you!" was a liberating day for me.

Oh, and the Cranberries suck. As does nickelback.

C'mon, Shout was great! I was not even 10 when Devo first hit, so even if I was musically aware they would have creeped me out to the max. Records like Oh No! and Shout! eased me into the back catalog.

Also, am I the only one that laughed his head off every time I heard that Target TV commercial a couple years back that used "Beautiful World" for its backing track? They, for some reason, edited out the actual theme of the song: "It's a beautiful world, for you...but not for me!"

ALSO I appreciate you giving a track from ABC's Beauty Stab -- commonly referred to as the greatest album of all time -- more ink here, acknowledging its chart success and finally giving it its due. "That Was Then (But this is Now)" is generally regarded as the best single from this musical tour de force. Amen.
