Hard to picture Steve Pierce as a "young Gun" when he's over 60. Do the Repubs have any young people? We know they have lots of guns. I heard Berry had his campaign flyers at the gun shops. I never saw them at the Senior Centers with the others. (City Senior Centers have a political table with campaign material in season. For some reason it took weeks to get the League of Women Voters Voter Guides from their Barelas office to the other Centers last month.)

Haven't they said this is to keep people with special skills, who could often make much more on the open market? Also, people can un-retire if they get another job.

Why don't we pay attention to the many more double-dippers from the military, and from police and fire departments?

By the way, the Carpentere Union contract forbids this for their members. I don't know how many other unions do.

Here's a thought, if more businesses move to new mexico as the above writer argues, then it will mean MORE taxes not less, because more businesses means more jobs. The businesses won't necessarily be taxed at a high rate, but there will be revenues drawn from that. Additionally, there will be employees and jobs created from those businesses which will result in income taxes and less *gasp* unemployment and welfare.

I'm still not seeing the bad part about this whole gameplan. With Denish you'll likely just get more of the same...corruption, overspending, and more idiotic state run programs (like the monorail).

Sounds like the hospital don't mind ditching people who can't vote, and can't pressure their employers for health care coverage. Otherwise, undocumented families pay the same taxes as anyone else, and need health care, too. Even if you don't care about them, the rest of us need to be protected against communicable dieases like TB and Hepatitis and flu.

I call these children "the new bastards". We used to discriminate against people whose parents didn't have marriage paperwork. Now it's immigration paperwork. Did you know that poor people not born here aren't entitled to Medicaid until they have been here legally for 5 years? What are they supposed to do in the meantime?

To me, this is parallel to making sure everyone's kids are in school so they are becoming literate, productive members of society and not getting into trouble or becoming child labor.

Have they asked for records from the other bidder? They should be coming forward if they think they were unfairly denied the contract. How do they know there was another one? It is very fishy that such a large contract was awrded a week after the ad ran. I know public procurement moves much slower than that.

Forcing American companies to pay for a year of maternity leave would bankrupt a lot of those companies -- not to mention giving them an incentive to avoid hiring women of childbearing age whenever possible. If the government is going to pay...well, that's just one more program with one more bureaucracy. These "other countries" are not the workers' paradises that many in this country seem to think they are. Unfortunately, it looks like we're going to have to become one of them before most of us realize the truth.

Feminism isn't what lowered wages and benefits so most mothers had to work -- corporations and their well-funded Congressmen did. And that's not what made so many fathers abandon their children.
If we had the kind of family programs they do in dozens of other countries, mothers could stay home with their children for the first year or two, and childcare would be publicly funded like the public schools. Parents would have shorter workweeks, paid vacations, and sick leave. They wouldn't hold on to bad jobs only for the health coverage. How is it other countries can do this, and we can't? We put our public money into the military instead. Anyone who proposes these programs, like Congressman Kucinich, is dismissed as a Socialist.

Hasn't Quest had pleny of opportunity to improve communications infrastructure, with little result?

Maybe we aren't supposed to notice this part: "Also part of Arnold-Jones' platform were relaxing regulation and tax policy to draw more business to the state, improving the education system and supporting more energy-delivery infrastructure across the state."

I could never understand how Rebublicans think we can collect fewer taxes and improve education at the same time. Do we want businesses that just come here for less regulation?

Mayor Marty is very good at taking credit for things that others did, even things he worked against. Community arts organizations, the city council, and city employees really made these things happen. He was against the Arts Tax several years ago (along with the Chamber of Commerce), which would have trained and funded many small arts organizations.

Let's see, wasn't it approving casino gambling, with associated large campaign contributions, that got Republican Gary Johnson elected Governor? I remember Bruce King wouldn't sign the compacts, and lost to Johnson.

Some US people want English declared as the US's official language. They think it will encourage immigrants and Indians to learn English faster by punishing them if they use other languages. I meant that England, the source of the English language, which gets lots of immigrants, doesn't feel it necessary to do that officially. And their public broadcasting system, the BBC, also broadcasts in Gaelic. Enlightened people realize that almost all immigrants learn English as fast as they can, and that it isn't a handicap to know and use more than one language. Each language structures reality differently, and it helps in problem-solving to know more than one way. And it's insulting (and illegal) to tell people they can't use their language.

Actually, one of them was deported, but came back:

"One suspect, Pablo Ortiz, had been arrested for DWI in May 2008; the arresting officer didn’t ask him about his immigration status. Ortiz spent 46 days in jail, was released and then agreed to “voluntary deportation.” He was sent back to El Salvador last August, but then returned to New Mexico, although authorities don’t know how or when."

Yes, India has had English as its official language since its creation in 1947. England has managed to get along without English as its official language for centuries.

Having a drivers license lets the state track you, and to allow and enforce your getting car insurance, including liability and uninsured motorist. Isn't that a good thing? What does it have to do with your federal immigration status? By the way, I think two of them had revoked drivers licenses for DWI. That doesn't seem to keep a person from driving.

Notice that they didn't say that he heasn't been accused of misconduct, or investigated for it. They may not be allowed to say that.

Isn't it absurd that a candidate for the Mayoral election doesn't have to declare until 57 days before the election? According to the 2009 ELECTION CALENDAR: CAMPAIGN DEADLINES FOR MAYORAL CANDIDATES, the "Declaration of Candidacy" doesn't have to be filed until August 11, which is 4 days after the First day political signs can be displayed. http://www.cabq.gov/clerk/documents/2009_electi...

I think if you take the public money dispensed on April 3 (and turn in the signatures) you should have to be a declared candidate. I wonder if the recent City Charter Task Force looked at this. The minutes from the April 2 and 23 meetings still aren't up on the City's website., though technically their report was due April 6.
