When you factor in finding parking, it's sometimes faster. I wish University felt safer to ride on, though.

Re: Joe. It was fun reading how in 1966 he envisioned a computer becoming sentient and calculating how to run a revolution.

I recently moved to SF, and was given a copy of Season of the Witch, by David Tolbot. "Everyone who lives here should read this." It's a history of the city from 1967 to 1982, when the city "radically changed itself". So far I'm up to the Human Be-in Festival, Jan 1967. Lots to go.

Re: bdotr

Is that the new 1WTC building in pic #4?

Re: Jeff Cooks - Coconut Shrimp with Tamarind Ginger Sauce, Baingan Bharta, Simple Summer Stew with Herb Butter, Naan

Nope, I didn't know you made it around the same time. Check back in a year or two and I'd expect it to cover more of the city.

Re: Joe. The authors spent a bit of time in the intro saying, "this is a satisfactory number of subjects", but I don't know enough about the standards of the field or stats to determine if it's true.

Re: Joe. They looked on a dating/hookup site and found 100 people who identified as tops and 100 that identified as bottoms. It just didn't include those that identified as versatile or didn't give a preference.

Re: Joe. It didn't assume there was one identifier, instead it looked to see if face pics could be an identifier.

Re: Jeff Cooks - Passover in San Diego

Hah yeah, got a request for it I couldn't refuse. Usually I just search the web for copies of recipes that I cook from cookbooks, and I guess I need to check them more. I fixed the link to a different site, though, just in case. The diced tomatoes pretty much dissolved into the sauce, so 5oz of puree sounds, taste-wise, like it should basically work. I've read that a 3:1 water:grain ratio works for both millet and quinoa, but who knows. Glad it sort've worked out!

Re: Teaching the origins of life

I like it so far.

I think it also might be useful to introduce the idea of a replicator - that there had to have formed some sort of molecule which, under the conditions, was able to self-replicate. proto-RNA, for example. I like your description of cell membranes. Maybe how cells without structure which would ingest things like ameobas, and could have swallowed another cell in order to create a cell with a nucleus.

Also I think it's important to emphasize the scientific process. something like "there's many different hypotheses on how life started, the field is called abiogenesis. Here are 2 or 3 of them, and here's how we go about testing if they're true or not." And mention one or two of the very untrue ones from centuries ago which are clearly false now, and how we learned they were false by taking data, doing experiments.

Re: The practical guide to casual and stylish looking clipless shoes

So which shoe did you get?

Re: http://jeffcooks.tumblr.com/post/26962053166

I remember seeing that book when it came out, and being very tempted by it. I've been cooking Bittman recipes from the NYT for years, and I like his general cooking philosophy and style. We shall see! I've been trying to actually use the books I already have before expanding my collection.

That said, I recently got a gift of an Indian cookbook from a chef in Vancouver, Vij's at Home. I was happy to get a book full of Indian recipes, which I think is about 1/3 vegetarian. It's not a giant tome like the 660 Curries you'd mentioned before, but what I've tried so far has been good.

Re: http://jeffcooks.tumblr.com/post/22767169760

Thanks for the tip on the book, it might be worth adding another 900 page tomb to my collection.

Re: http://jeffcooks.tumblr.com/post/17200057013

Good idea, I'll give it a shot.
