The asshole who did this is small and cowardly but was emboldened by forces larger and more powerful than him or herself. A couple of weeks ago, M. Leblanc wrote about a similarly disturbing and enraging experience in the subway in Chicago. (The post is called "Trigger Warning" and might not be appropriate for survivors of sexual violence.) I have not directly experienced something like this recently, but just also learned about a similar incident Southwest Mississippi, an area especially notorious for racial murders and other violence against African Americans. It hits close to home for me, however, because I am doing historical research and journalism about the murders and violence in the area and know families of the victims.

I cannot tell if there is a sudden increase in these occurrences or if their effects and meanings are compounded by the right's reclaiming of some of its most overt racist rhetoric.

trying to decide who the true inheritors of Pete Seeger's legacy are, here's

I did not know that, but I am not at all surprised. He's a damn good musician. I first heard of him when Reverse Eclipse came out in 2000 and my sister pressed a burned copy into my hands. It's till my goto record for some things, but I love most of the other stuff he's done, solo and with others.

Way back when I was in college in the late 80s/early 90s Geoff dated someone in my crowd of friends. For a short while I took bass lessons from him. Did you know he was a killer funk bassist before Karate, Glorytellers, etc?

seems to have happened back in september 2007 in nova scotia. found this canadian red cross press release citing the incident and giving them an award for their anti-bullying.

I love this story, but I have not been able to source it to a real news report. I'm a little suspicious that it may be the stuff of those feel good email chain letters. I hope I'm wrong and it really happened.
