A couple of weeks ago, M. Leblanc wrote about a similarly disturbing and enraging experience in the subway in Chicago. (The post is called "Trigger Warning" and might not be appropriate for survivors of sexual violence.) I have not directly experienced something like this recently, but just also learned about a similar incident Southwest Mississippi, an area especially notorious for racial murders and other violence against African Americans. It hits close to home for me, however, because I am doing historical research and journalism about the murders and violence in the area and know families of the victims.

I cannot tell if there is a sudden increase in these occurrences or if their effects and meanings are compounded by the right's reclaiming of some of its most overt racist rhetoric.

Re: US Representative John Lewis Steps Up for GLBT Rights

Don't thank me. (Eg: "Obama won!" = "racism defeated and a liberal political landscape secured")

Re: united colours of vruz - Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Concert and President Obama

I think it's safe to say that any comfort and self-indulgence you detect is coming from the Boss and not from Pete, himself. As a counterpoint to Springstein's comment, see the recent Seeger performances that I tumbled last night:

http://minorjive.net/post/103195125/pete-seeger...
http://minorjive.net/post/103176709/pete-seeger...

Also note that Springstein is a Johnny come lately to Seeger's message and importance. Springstein did not know Seeger's work until Springstein was approached to contribute to a Seeger tribute in the late 90s.

I would add, too, that Springstein's cover of Pete's anti-war song, Bring Em Home, omits the most radical of the lyrics:

Show those generals their fallacy:
Bring them home, bring them home.
They don't have the right weaponry,
Bring them home, bring them home.

For defense you need common sense,
Bring them home, bring them home.
They don't have the right armaments,
Bring them home, bring them home.

The world needs teachers, books and schools,
Bring them home, bring them home.
And learning a few universal rules,
Bring them home, bring them home.

In Bruce's version, it's just a more neutral chant to get the soldiers home.

Re: Keats's acquisitiveness

Hmm, perhaps Whitman was replying to Keats with: "For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you."

Re: Skype for the iPhone next week?

Skype for iPhone would be a great thing.
