Lindsay, the quality of your thought and the skill with which you have expression it is stunning. I wish there was one thing you said I could disagree with in your piece, because it might look like I'm fawning, but there isn't and I'll have to live with that risk.

The best universal prose are those which are unapologetically specific. Concrete. In a time and place. In that sense this is perhaps the best commentary / call to action on "community" I have read.

Whatever may be dead, blogging is not one of them.

I use my self-hosted WP blog for my project info and long-form expressions; short to medium length more light-hearted, but generaly not silly, original content on Posterous; and the ephemeral stuff just goes direct to Friendfeed.

Also, I joined as a contributor on a group blog, http://allwordyandjunk.blogspot.com (populated by Friendfeed alumni), to which I selectively cross-post from either WP or Posterous.

Preach! Autofollow issues don't even matter much one way or another to me personally at this point. But attitude counts for a lot, and this is not gaining them any points from the users who are/might be/used to be/could be again passionate about the service, but don't appreciate the heavy-handed priesthood affectation.
