Like you said, this is a bit of a hornet's nest when it comes to people overcoming their privacy concerns. I noticed that Geni is dipping their toe in the water with this. If you look at the Statistics page it gives you average life expectancy for male and female and longest lifespans for male and female. The Pro package seems to have some additional stats. Geni should definitely expand in this area.

I'm a big fan of Geni. We have a tree dating back to the 1500's.

Re: SONOS ZonePlayer S5

I really like how other music services are integrated into the Sonos - e.g. Pandora, last.fm, rhapsody and being able to synch what I'm playing across several different "zones" in the house. So it really depends on your listening habits. If you're mostly in one room and you mostly play your iTunes then Sonos is probably overkill.

Re: Google Wave’s unproductive email metaphors

Robert, does Rackspace have plans to implement Google Wave behind the firewall for internal projects and/or collaborative projects with customers? They talked quite a bit about how Twitter might be useful for local government but there were nothing was really committed to. Newsom said that he's been receiving tweets from people about pot holes and actually taking action on those requests (he made a disclaimer that he wouldn't be able to respond to every pothole complaint). He also talked about how Twitter could evolve into something like the 311 service and text message services that are currently in place. They also talked about how it could be a useful tool to do public opinion polls and use it as an emergency broadcast system. There was a funny moment where Newsom said that his staff freaked out when he told them that he had opened a Twitter account last month. they said "Don't touch that thing" but later agreed to him using it.

Re: Off the high speed grid

Enjoy your time off the high-speed grid. (Scripting News)

I definitely agree that Twitter is very small in comparison to AIM, Yahoo Mail, and AIM. On paper, Google should be able to do to Twitter what Microsoft did to Netscape. They have GTalk, Jaiku, and Dodgeball but to date they haven't made any kind of serious threat to Twitter. Yahoo has continually fumbled their social networking efforts - Yahoo 360, Yahoo Mash (now shut down), and whatever their latest effort is called. Maybe Microsoft will make a move with Mesh but many people out there will never use MS products, which means that there will always be room for a strong #2. Facebook has had status updates even before Twitter and Twitter has thrived despite that. So who's left?

Re: Is Twitter the next Netscape? Many people have spent over a year cultivating their community on Twitter and that is a very difficult thing to replicate on a new, competing service. Switching to a technically superior browser is much easier because the switching cost is zero from a community standpoint. So far the pattern has been people experimenting with new Twitter-clones (Pownce, Plurk, Identi.ca, etc.) but ultimately returning to Twitter because that is where there community still lives.

Re: bijansabet.com | a tumblelog by Bijan Sabet | Sawdust Man - Ben Kweller

Plenty of companies proved them wrong back then and the same will happen with this cycle. Yes, we're going to lose some of the weak players and there will be some consolidation but that isn't altogether a bad thing. The innovators will continue to keep their heads down and create outstanding products. And they won't need any VC funding to do that.

Re: bijansabet.com | a tumblelog by Bijan Sabet | Blitzen Trapper - Furr
