I applaud NYT for trying this given the immense inertia of their old media brethren, but part of me can't help but ask myself, so what? They've finally figured out what originally made Yahoo! popular circa 1994 and become a portal?

OK, OK, link journalism is quite different from being a portal, I know. But it just seems so...unimpressive...?

Man, I'd love to read/hear some reasoned analysis of this English Only bit. I've heard one argument that it'll save money, another that it'll endanger our food safety, and that's about it. Meanwhile, all of that gets lost in the overarching theme that it makes Nashville seem anti-cosmopolitan, protectionist and downright backward.

Know of any concise summaries of this debacle?

Hey Aron (and Dan),

Great interview.

Questions: How do you get journalists to think like developers?

For example, I've been asked to give mini-seminars at work on everything from Social Media to basic HTML (which shows a pretty great willingness on the part of the editors, in my opinion, to learn) but nothing seems to stick. We (editorial, with a strong history in print) remain in a silo and our processes remain oriented around print.

Deadrick was once one of the scarier streets in Nashville when it doubled as the bus depot, but now that they’ve shipped all of the homeless people out built a new station, they want it to look nice.

Sadly, the interview didn't really address to much about that. It was
edited quite substantially.
I know what you mean too, I agree that it's easier for people to use
cloud computing and simply hope for the best. However, I do think that
users need to be more diligent with backing things up.

Ok developers, who's going to come up with an auto-backup-er for
Google docs, etc? :-)

Disclaimer: I did not listen (yet), but will later.

I've heard from people who have been locked out of Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, etc., and, while I agree that it's worth it to pose the question "Is cloud computing all it's cracked up to be?", I worry it's also futile. For the vast majority of those who've only experienced the immense convenience of Google Documents, for example, how do you convince them to go back to Word (other than having them get locked out)?

Anyway, I'll listen to the interview and see what the alternative is, how cloud computing is getting more/less secure, and all the other wonderful things I'm sure the interview addresses before piping in more.
