Why Can't I Find the Perfect Tool?

Ask and it shall be given. When I automatically posted this blog post as a note on Facebook, a commentor told me about an app on the Android phone called gTasks http://lifehacker.com/5379607/gtasks-syncs-goog... that easily syncs with Gmail's taks list feature. It's a really really simple solution, but gets the job done for those who want simple lists.

Still not robust enough for me, but could be useful. RTM is still miles ahead http://lifehacker.com/5359672/remember-the-milk... on Android as far as capabilities go. But Things is even better (but in other ways). I'm still confused.

Re: The Root 100 Recognizes Black Technology Innovators and Advocates

This is a great list. Kudos to theROOT for not rehashing the same old tired lists or relying on an old formula like Black Enterprise. I actually even learned about some new folks on here.

Re: E Tu Essence?: An Exercise in Bad Site Design

In that case, the question becomes who the target market is. Maybe none of us on here are the target market and the intended target market is satisfied. Can't really tell without knowing if there was user testing and focus groups that went into this site redesign and editorial content plan.

Re: Getting Things Done with Doit.im

I was about to use this as a replacement to "Things" but it really doesn't do that for me. I was trying to figure out the benefits of "Things" vs "Remember The Milk" and now that I know of this one it complicates the game. I mean, it's like "Things," but it doesn't have those features that Evernote has, whereas you can attach docs, etc. I'm starting to think that "Things" is the ultimate and I might just have to plunk down the bucks. What does make doit.im and RTM great though are the mobile apps (coming mobile apps in the case of this app).

RTM is fine, but I just need it to have more GTD features. It's a bit simple and some may say something like "Doit" and "Things" are overkill. Still torn, You just added to my confusion of best app to use. Again, I figured "Things" was it, since I used to use "iGTD." But how many apps give you all the syncing features you need and blend a little bit of Evernote's features in it. You might say just use Evernote then, but even Evernote costs a fee when you want to use all the capabilities.

Agggghhhh

Thanks Rahsheen for helping me agonize even more over how I should Get Things Done!

Great review BTW.

Re: E Tu Essence?: An Exercise in Bad Site Design

Sherri, thanks for keeping it real and writing this piece really well.

I just visited the site and I'm having all sorts of UE issues. I'm sure it will evolve though. For instance, I'm wanting "Essence Today" and "Essence Bloggers" to take me to a landing page so I can "See All" or even a "See All" at the bottom would work. The jiggity carousel effect is cool if it means it's simulating real-time updates of these areas, but where's the archive. Same on needing "Features" and "Hot Galleries" to link somewhere like the Video Galleries does.

Clicking on the main nav elements, I'm not sure what kind of content I'm seeing on the page. I'm not sure it matters, but what's the content type. As far as the SEO game on the main nav, it's killing it. I can tell a lot of thought and dollars went into this step.

I'm feeling the need for some real A/B user testing on various home page looks and feels.

Overall not a bad effort at trying to embrace the SM sphere, while maintaining the identity of the mag. Even the turned-page design comes across as cute and headnod to the actual print product.

There's going to be growing pains in all of this for lots of media folks as more and more independently owned media properties step up to grab attention and eyeballs. At the end of the day, if the brand has mindshare it won't matter one IOTA what the site looks like or how it functions. Marketing is essential. The rest can be worked on with time.

Re: Ping.fm / Uploaded Image from baratunde

Strange

Re: Simple Blogging Faceoff: Tumblr vs. Posterous

I think posterous adds an elegance and simplicity that tumblr just doesn't have. It's a social browser (like Flock, but different), that's basically a cocoa app. It takes a little bit to configure exactly the way you want it, but once you do it's kind of worth it. It's good at enabling you to watch all of your social web activities all at once. Great for second screen browsing.

Re: How I Manage Facebook

I have to agree with you on Facebook and Twitter being completely different animals. I use Facebook in much the same way as you and Chris, with some exceptions. Facebook is far more personal for me, and there are people there whom I grew up with, went to elementary, middle, and high school with as well as college. Those people see a wider scope of who I am, like Chris mentions above. The home page drives me crazy so I don't use it often. I just look for the people I want to look for -- and now realize I'll have to start using lists.

As for Twitter, I know a lot of people there too, but I've met them through work, blogging, or conferences. So I have different discussions there. My hair is down a lot more on FB and it should be..it's a place for Friends, right?

Re: The Big Push

Tweeting it, blogging it, reading it. They'd been playing it here in NYC all weekend non-stop. The buzz is definitely cuz it's Jay-Z. I've been looking forward to the death of autotune for a while, at least in the way it's being used. It's interesting though, he's taking shots at his baby brother in this by talking about autotune usage in hiphop, skinny jeans, and wearing bright colors. But then he turns around and gives him props in the song. Interesting.

Re: It’s a Privilege to Meet You

Happy to meet you too.

Re: Web 2.0 Expo Should Think Outside-the-Box

I'm happy to see this post as well and applaud your continuing to carry the banner and raise the torch and all of that good stuff. As one of the few African-Americans or women, who does get to represent at conferences like these, I can only say that we need more diversity across the board. Happy to see blackweb20 rep in this regard and here's more well wishes for your proposal.

I'd love to go to a conference and not just bump into people like myself, Anil, Charlene Li, and Jeremiah over and over again. I think SXSW showed a great representation of ethnic/race topics, gender politics, and even lgbt. I'm feeling confident that what's grown at SXSW will carry over into some of these more, often considered elite, conferences.

Re: Dell's Adamo Revealed: Big Luxury, Big Price, Low Greenness

Yay!!!!

Re: Global Grind Shake-up, CEO out, on the way to Deadpool?

I've heard this news as well. I'm a little afraid of it myself though. I had location turned on in my Twidroid (android twitter client) and didn't realize it and it kept updating my location. But at least it wasn't in tweets, it was changing my location in my settings.

There are ways this could be useful, as I said re SXSW but other ways in which it could be damaging. What I do like about Google's offer vs loopt and others is how much control you have over privacy settings.

I just started tinkering with it last night after i got my Google over-the-air update, and I gotta say, I'm not mad at it.

Re: http://www.blackweb20.com/2009/02/03/ei-clutch-deal-expands-partnership-explores-larger-online-marketspace/

Congrats @Dede

Re: http://www.blackweb20.com/2009/02/03/honeys-sweet-new-redesign/

I'm rooting for them too. Always have. And the new EIC is one of my mentees so I'm definitely watching this one. But I notice a few technical challenges ahead besides the lack of syndication. URL structure for one -- having cleaner, shorter, title-based URLs that also work good for SEO. Any SEO in particular would help as well. For instance, some of the titles look like their actually images and not in H1 or H2 tags.

Other key things if you just look at the source code could present real real challenges ahead. But I won't go on, cuz I'm not bashing. I really want to celebrate this beta, and besides, I'd rather get paid for my advice.

Re: Erykah Badu & Jay Electronica Tweet birth of baby girl

I've seen someone announce a birth on USTREAM (that's right, live footage of the entire birth) so though this surprised me, it shouldn't have.

Re: Russell Simmons named new Editor-in-Chief of GlobalGrind.com

It would be interesting if you could bring in all the tweets related to this post since the first tweet the other day when I first started talking about the press release.
