It's got me thinking I should be
mainSTREAMing a lot more apps, and devising ways to get it done.

Re: Performance Alerting: Is Louis Gray the Canary in Your Coal Mine?

I would say I'm fairly objective. :-)

To be honest, FriendFeed knows about issues and typically solves them before I know about it. I'm so pleased you're having such great traction with the site, and I'm glad I was able to help in some small way. I hope we do get to meet in person. Your upbeat attitude and omnipresence on FriendFeed are much appreciated. You are way too nice to me.

Re: rizzn's personal blog

I like the phrase "masochistic joy-gasm". In the Valley, the pressure to "keep up" cannot be understated.
For every minivan I pass on the way to work, I see BMWs, Mercedes and
Lexus all around. My 10 year old car with 140k miles on it, featuring
a cassette deck in the dash, doesn't exactly scream early adopter, for
example.

And, being Mormon, I have seen many friends who have found the costs
of Silicon Valley to be too much, and when they start a family, many
head back to Utah. That my wife and I are not from Utah, and plan to
stay in the Bay Area, as we raise our family, at times seems to be the
exception and not the rule. That's why I teasingly put Utah as the
extreme alternative to Atherton or Woodside.

The chart may be somewhat tongue in cheek, but parts of it are real.
Only a few months ago, I was getting new startups coming out of the
woodwork asking to be covered. Now, it's a lot quieter. But that's for
another post altogether some time.

Re: louisgray.com: Tech Employees' Political Contributions Dramatically Favor Obama

Good catch on Adobe. I do think when there's something of this nature, it would make sense to get multiple sources of verification, or one that was trusted.

In the last couple months, there have been some real doozies out there, including:

1. Jared of Subway being declared dead (via Twitter)
2. The LDS Church bidding for Facebook (via Blogs)
3. Steve Jobs has a heart attack (via iReport)

Truth is that ReadWriteWeb and Mathew Ingram, well-intended or not, are very unlikely to have original data on any of those stories. They don't have the unique sources and relationships needed to get the truth before more traditional media does.

I'd suggest starting with a "common sense" test, which I got yelled at for saying last time (re: #2). If it sounds odd, it likely is, and some inquiry is needed, whether you write for a blog or the WSJ.

Re: louis gray | My Philly Network

I was shocked... *shocked* to see my name as a tag in here. As I told Tony via e-mail last night,
it's easier for me to write glowing reviews than negative ones. As he
and I discussed over e-mail and via FriendFeed, it looks like we have
a disconnect of expectations. I understand your note on "not bundling
up early adopter social networks", which I wouldn't necessarily
advocate, but with that said, Twitter was the first one I saw, which I
believe qualifies as much as any.

Do you believe that users will use their *.mp designation as a domain
they can control, and that this will be the future? As I noted in the
post, it's quite the flexible ending, assuming most of the good names
aren't gone. Keep me posted. By no means will I delete the account.
I'm eager to see what you can do next.

Re: Disqus Has A Public API - Now What?

You wrote, "Why should any of those options really be of any interest to a blog owner?"

It's possible the blog owner isn't the target here, but instead those who are building services that would integrate with Disqus are the target. Also, my hypothesis of a firewalled Yammer-equivalent Disqus-powered tool could work for Intranet collaboration, making this a good move for the enterprise (just speculation).

I know you and Alexander are on a "social media low" right now, so the comment "Great idea for people that live within the Silicon Valley bubble." is not a big surprise, but the alternative to being open is closed, and this is a good step for one of the services I know you like a lot. So, let's see what can happen!

Re: louisgray.com: After Monkeying Around, I'm Not Going Bananas for Chi.mp

Lindsay, I was similarly interested. My feeling is that the *.mp is
the equivalent of service/*, only it's the first part of the domain
that is customized. Would I really be able to take techpu.mp to
another registrar and make that my lifestream dashboard, per se? I am
eager to see what they think is possible.

Re: louisgray.com: After Monkeying Around, I'm Not Going Bananas for Chi.mp

Typically, I am patient. I usually have a long runway for alpha and beta products. I just got an extensive note from Tony Haile of chi.mp, and that's a good sign, that they are paying attention and have plans to further develop. I won't expect this will be the last time we hear from these guys, and I hope I'm proven very wrong.

Re: louisgray.com: After Monkeying Around, I'm Not Going Bananas for Chi.mp

Mona - good response.

1) Regarding it limiting who sees what, I've seen that in a few places. Even services like MyBlogLog let you selectively hide some data from friends and not others.
2) The self-owned .mp domain is cute, but not too much better than a directory (e.g. service.com/mona)
3) I did check out the contacts section. Tagging and groups are good features, but that's not really what I was looking for - considering what it bills itself as - a "content hub" and "identity management platform".
4) You say it's an online business card, but to me, that's what the blog can be for. The blog is your brand, and the external services can be included (like I do with the Friendfeed profile).
5) Yes, it's beta (or alpha). I get that. Maybe they can build from my feedback. Some services listen and others get frustrated. We'll see what the chi.mp guys can do.
