The taxes are so high (on everything) it's impossible to get ahead in life. So tell me, how is Chicago's balance sheet looking? Oh wait, Mayor Daley has to privatize everything because the city is essentially bankrupt.

As a Finance major, knowing that the CME Group is the most powerful financial exchange on planet Earth, there is no reason Chicago shouldn't have a zillion dollar surplus as trading firms have been making a killing with the recent volatility in the market.

Please read a bit more, after Lehman, Finance folks have been leaving NYC for Chicago because there are so few jobs in the industry now (not to mention the cost of living is unbareable).

Try again and pick some cities that aren't the absoute biggest in the country. Regardless of party, business will locate there to be around other business.

Re: The Politics of Fear: Revisiting Porter’s Missed Opportunities in 100 South (109th Ave.).

Both NYC and Chicago are very pro-business, pro-growth and pro-development and have been largely run by Democrats with the past 50 years. Despite the high taxes in Chicago, it is home to many Fortune 500 companies. NYC, on the other hand has had strong growth, is the heart of the finance industry and has been highly developed.

Re: The Politics of Fear: Revisiting Porter’s Missed Opportunities in 100 South (109th Ave.).

Leozh,
I grew up right in the middle of the Democratic Mecca of Lake County (1 mile east of Gary). Straight ticket voting is 3:1 in favor of the Dems. People wonder why they live in such terrible run down places yet their blind allegiance to 'pull the straight D' is what got them in that situation.

History speaks for itself, look back at any (big) city ran by Dems for the last 50+ straight years and let me know how they have been "pro-business, pro-growth or pro development".....

Re: The Politics of Fear: Revisiting Porter’s Missed Opportunities in 100 South (109th Ave.).

I think we can all agree that government should not hinder growth, job creation, economic development and all the other things you list -- which is it doing now.

Although I am a staunch Democrat, I think that what you have in NWI is a party that has been in power for too long, one that is stagnant and corrupt, in desperate need of change. Perhaps an electoral shake-up will be better for the party long term.

Re: The Politics of Fear: Revisiting Porter’s Missed Opportunities in 100 South (109th Ave.).

Also, Leozh, I did not mention government doing anything but providing basic infrastructure and an environment for private business to thrive. I do not in any way advocate the government strong-arming or even controlling development to occur or how or when. I believe that government's function should be minimal in providing the backdrop, namely the proper infrastructure, to foster the best possible business environment. I think that is a fairly pro-Republican idea. I think to some degree you envision Republicans as those who oppose everything (see Ron Paul "Republicans"). These do not represent the mainstream of the Party, and furthermore, its agenda. I'm glad you agree, no matter what side of the aisle you're on. Steve is definitely correct; partisanship is not an issue in NWI, and if it were the Parties would be almost reversed. Thanks for your input, Leozh!

Re: The Politics of Fear: Revisiting Porter’s Missed Opportunities in 100 South (109th Ave.).

It's surprising to see this posted on a Republican blog.
