Twice in my life, I have been rather ill before a major presentation. Each time, I thought of canceling, thinking that I could not possibly go on.

In each circumstance, I rallied. At the last minute. I was able to go on and give a better-than-regular presentation.

In both instances, I was too embarrassed about being sick to tell my hosts. In both cases, my hosts took one look at me and recommended an out -- "we can tell the audience you're sick..."

In both cases, I found myself saying, "No. I'll be fine..." but thinking, "Shut up, mouth! Take the out! You cannot go on, you're ill." Like an out-of-body hallucination: my mouth says, "Sure!" while my brain is going "Nooooooo!"

I can also recall one presentation where I had way too much coffee previously. I was shaking like a leaf up there. Looked like a meth addict. Someone should have gotten the hook and dragged me off.

So I'm still flummoxed about who makes that call. When I'm sick, I hallucinate that "I can do it!" -- so I'm not sure if I'm in any shape to make a coherent decision. But apparently, I've hallucinated correctly twice -- which could just be a coincidence, and I'm setting myself up for future disaster.

Re: PowerPoint Design in 2009: “Very Superstitious…

One of my favorites lines is,

"Don't believe everything you believe."

But then, I'm a fan of irony!

Re: Free startup idea - mac.stream()

Agreed.

Kind of like how the concept of "renting a truck when you need one" and driving a smaller car or using public transportation for 97% of your daily needs hasn't really caught on in the US, either.

What will it take to make "thoughtfulness" and "consideration towards others" more desirable values?

Re: Bookmarked: Presentation nightmares (British Airways Business Life)

Wow. The students drew storyboards, instead of writing a speech. After they drew the storyboards, they got up to tell the story.

Big difference from 'reading the words' and 'describing the pictures you see in your head'. Storytelling helped speakers connect better with the audience.

If I could add a #7 to your list:

"Try getting away from the words. Here's the big difference:
On each table, there was a giant ice bucket in the middle. Each bucket was filled with a different type of bottled beverage. One table might have micro-brew beer, another wine coolers, another bottles of soda, another cheap beer, etc. There were no bottle openers at the event. So, people formed groups not based on who they knew or liked, but first on what kind of beverage they preferred. Next, we had to brainstorm how we were going to open these beverages. This involved wandering around, finding people who might have an opener on their key chain or in their purse. It totally worked. I bonded with people I might not otherwise have met -- over beverage choice! And over a creative puzzle -- how do we get our beverage?

It was fun. Also, I was popular -- because I had a bottle opener key chain!

Re: Speak Schmeak: Don't distract: Contract!

Remember guys and dolls? Some of the sentences were outrageously long and contained phrases like e.g. and parenetheses. Who actually SAYS e.g. or speaks in parentheses???We were prohibited from re-writes. The customer told us it had to be spoken AS IS.

It was one nutty day in the studio. It started out stressful, but we ended up laughing SO HARD.

"That was awful! Now do it, and pretend you're Yosemite Sam!
