For the most part, it bums me out how clueless they are about the online communities and tools around them that could greatly help their causes. They want me to digest a project, agree to contribute, and break out my check book all while standing on the street.

Donor's Choose is the nextgen version of this sort of activism. You read about the project (from among several), learn about the recipients, and even get to interact with the people - I was thanked twice for my donation by the teacher who was looking to raise money for a projector. Of course there is stuff like Twitter and FB integration.

Good stuff. Have a great meetup!

Re: Is Blog Reading Mainstream?

I got that one right, thankfully and in this one case, it was my inability to use an RSS reader (never have been able to use one despite trying dozens of times) that helped me out

Re: Glue: From Browser Plugin To Web Service

@Lawrence, you are spot on. I didn't see that coming - a few years ago i would have guessed that blog readership would pull rss readers into the mainstream. Search and social seem to have picked up the slack.

Re: Just Try It Out

They are early and likely getting bombed with traffic so they may have turned some stuff off, but some obvious things that aren't there yet or not working: 1) sharing on other services / Twitter / FB integration is either broken or not built yet; 2) finding friends is not there yet; 3) no obvious way to toggle between everyone / my friends view; 4) outbound invitations is either poorly integrated or not there yet. Despite these product gaps, my guess is that they are seeing some astonishing engagement numbers to attract such blue chip investors so early.

Re: The Blog Where Everybody Knows Your Name

hmmm... checkins can apply to more than just places. Being able to wrap your mind around it with the whole picture remaining clear is the trick. We allow companies to point a domain or subdomain to our servers, and we automatically parse all their emails and post them to a web form. This prevents companies from having to setup their email server and develop a parse application to support what you just mentioned. To find out more about the parse API please go here http://wiki.sendgrid.com/doku.php?id=parse_api

Re: Don't Forget About Email

And even beyond the newsletter and sharing aspects of email that Fred mentions, there is also the content posting potential.

notifications-xxx@disqus.com (content moderation)
post@posterous.com (blog posts)
mobile@facebook.com (mms photos)
reviews@rateitall.com (reviews of anything) (shameless plug)

Re: Ten Characteristics of Great Companies

I have always liked the concept of employees that act like founders.

Re: What We Can Learn From Mess

thanks!!
---
Gary Wolf
Contributing editor, Wired
Magazine home: www.wired.com
Current project: www.quantifiedself.org

Re: What We Can Learn From Mess

Gary, I thought your article was brilliant.
