I feel that I lent my own voice to the facts that you presented. If you do not agree, I would be happy to remove the story. The last thing I want to do is take credit for someone else's work. Just let me know.

Re: Prince: A Remembrance

Well done Jeff. I would start, read a few paragraphs, and then stop. Not because I didn't like it, but because I quickly recognized the truth in it, and realized that to some extent it's my story as well. Tonight, after midnight, in a darkened room with my loved one sleeping beside, I finally finished it. Of course I had no idea it would be about the Emitt Rhodes album, but it was thrilling to read the way you made the connection. Thank you for this, and I'm with Dw -- I wish you'd write more for Popdose too. Each time you have chosen to post something there it has been a very special event, and an inspiration for the rest of us. Profit be damned. It would be nice, but it's never been the reason I write for Popdose.

Re: Soul Serenade: Otis Clay, “Trying To Live My Life Without You”

I had that very same thought about the Oneders.

Re: Soul Serenade: Ramsey Lewis Trio, “The ‘In’ Crowd”

I agree David. The disco era was beginning to take hold by '76 and "Misty Blue" certainly didn't fit that mold, being more of a throwback to the classic soul of the '60s.

Re: Soul Serenade: Percy Sledge, “It Tears Me Up”

Thanks Dickie. Of course it was also the home of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, who wrote, among other hits, the song "Pleasant Valley Sunday" while living there. You can still take a nice drive on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange.

Re: A Fan’s Notes: Brian Wilson, “No Pier Pressure”

Thanks Jay. I think what I like best is the paragraph that contains your analysis of the '60s and '70s jam bands. I love the original Butterfield Blues Band, but never considered them a jam band. When I think about it though, East West certainly does seem to fit the bill. I have always considered the Allmans to be the first jam band. I'm not a big fan of the jam band scene (I think it's the jam band fans who turn me off more than anything else), but like you, I can get into a good long jam now and then. The reason I love the Allmans and can listen to them play endlessly is that have something that the others do not: swing. For me, it's the two drummers who make all the difference. Sure, there is an overwhelming abundance of musical talent in the band, but it's those swinging polyrhythms that take it to the next level for me.

I was at some of the shows chronicled in this set. Along with the great music is my memory of how the Allmans would start playing at around 1 a.m., and by the time they were done, and the side doors of the Fillmore were opened so that the audience could exit, there was morning light streaming through them. Those were some truly memorable nights, and I'm glad that everyone can hear them now in their entirety.
