What has surprised me most from talking to women who are strong Hillary supporters, is the amount that cite Michelle as a reason they are hesitant to vote for Barack. "She's too rough around the edges." This indicates a couple things to me....

First, women are the ones holding our gender back. We, as women, are intimidated and turned off by strong women. Recall back to earlier in the primary race when Hillary was constantly being forced to soften her demeanor (some might call it being more "lady like").

More importantly, people are still, unfortunately, voting based on an individual's personality (likability) -- or those of his/her family -- rather than his/her abilities and stance on the issues. It's written between the lines of this post, and it's a problem we all need to start talking about more often. When it comes to choosing a President, having an opinion on a person is not a substitute for being educated on the issues.

Re: CHANGE is a funny word

Thanks Cecil. Good point. And the reason the focus on that one message works is because MOST people will take ANY CHANGE vs. more of the same. It doesn't take a genius to realize that Americans are unhappy, and that naturally lends itself to a positive reception of a message of "change."

Of course, I purposefully didn't get into too much detail about the sweeping statement that I made about Barack Obama being able to back up his message of "change" with action... that's a much larger discussion about his policy, ethics, and achievements. Perhaps there will be more on that later... :)

Re: Emerging Influential Blogs: Down the Shore with Jen

Thanks! And if I had considered it before, your comment here solidified my decision, and gives me that extra incentive if I ever have the urge. I will remember your words here, and know that you care -- that many people care -- about me too much.

I almost cried when I read this comment, but I think I was too shocked for that kind of emotion. Three words almost made me cry. "We will talk." You have no idea how much that means to me.

Then 5 words made me smile: "one of your two Moms." Because I'm glad you still believe it, because I do. With all my heart.

Love you!

ps. I will go against your wishes, and ask how you stumbled onto this. We can chat about that offline :)

Re: Searching for "Emerging Influential Blogs of 2008"

Awesome, thanks TIffany. I would actually like to start reading more food blogs... and I have VERY little experience with Filipino food, so this is great. Thanks for your honesty and sharing your experience. Smoking is an odd thing, because when making a decision in any other area of my life, I would weight pro-cons. I can't think of one real pro, but I can think of dozens of cons... yet, I still make the wrong choice. I know there are millions of people who struggle with this, so you're not alone. I just did a quick search, and found some people blogging their quitting experience, so that might help. And here, from the Washington Post, for some extra incentive: http://tinyurl.com/3ub6yt

That "budget" actually sounds like a plan that would work for me. I'm an all-or-nothing girl, so if I just say NO to everything, but allow that one treat every could weeks, it could work. I would probably need to put a price tag on the treat though :)

Thanks so much! I hope you'll be able to make it to Barry's for BREAKfast :)

Re: kristen in red - I quit

Awesome, thanks Jen! I'll check out that blog.

Funny thing is that I'm an avid runner -- trained for a half marathon last year -- but burned out on it, and took some time off the last few months. I still play soccer, and notice the effects of smoking, but running would make it even more apparent that it needs to stop. Great advice... I think I needed an extra push to get back out there!

Re: kristen in red - I quit

Great advice, Brent. Fortunately for me and my health, this habit is VERY recent, and VERY sporadic, so #1 shouldn't be to difficult (knock on wood). Also, this isn't the first time I've fallen into this bad habit, but I want it to be THE LAST. For good or bad, I'm a "phase person" and only commit to things I REALLY care about. The negative influences come and go fairly quickly, but some are certainly harder to kill.

I'll definitely check out those sites, too. Thanks soooo much for caring!

Re: kristen in red - I quit

Thanks Larry! Very insightful -- I've never evaluated myself on those terms, and I'm not sure if I fit squarely into one kind or the other. Like you, I sadly think I might be the type who moves away from bad habits. But there's no saying that this can't change -- for me and you! Cheers to setting goals and moving toward them!

ps. Glad to see that Disqus is working... kinda. I have no idea how to move that comment link. We talked a lot this weekend at Podcamp about the required cultural shift that has to take place in organizations and corporations -- one that allows for honesty and transparency.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. While I agree that he fills most all of us with hope, I'm not sure that hope is enough to make most people vote. It's enough to inspire this growing network of support (which is rapidly building at an unprecedented pace that McCain can NEVER compete with)... but it will take something else to get out the tough vote. Something more specific. I remember when @SuperTuesday came onto the twitter scene and I was one of those people who wanted informed discussion about the election, and was glad to find a reliable news source that also would talk back. You are a Twitter gem in that way.

If Barack Obama's tweets actually started some kind of discussion among others, that would be great, but I'm not so sure they do. I'm leaving the value at a news feed with a personal touch.

I'm just hoping for a tweetback "YES WE CAN!"

Re: Are you listening @BarackObama?

Thanks for sharing, GeekMommy! For better or worse, politicians aren't the only ones using twitter to simply inform people where they're going and what they're going... and not listening or interacting.

I would actually like it if the campaigns had a twitter spokesperson, so long as they were transparent about it. I think that would be a great first step... and one way to engage voters.

For now, I'm still in the camp that would them use it this way rather than not at all.
