And the nice thing that I noticed when I used to write on tech was that if
you write a well thought-out piece about Friendfeed, like this one is,
whether critical or complimentary, you can always be assured that you'll get
a lot of good conversation here on FF. It's a nice way to revitalize
interest in your site and get people talking about you even more than they
already are.

Glad you liked it and yes as I watch the various Friendfeed comments being made show up here it is pretty funny. At the same time it's giving me some thoughts for another post so even though I don't *need* to participate in the whole FF back-patting I still can learn and draw from the conversation.

Don't put your kids into a moving seat like that-- it'll make them nauseous. If a child falls asleep in a rocker or something like this, it's not a good thing-- it means their body's shutting down so they don't throw up!

Think about some of the things you constantly check that are constantly updated or at least updated every hour or so. See if there's an iPhone app to do things on the go. Also think about the things you like to take care of first thing in the morning and see if you can put your iPhone to use.

Hi Corvida! Thanks for the article-- believe it or not, I've actually found that I have too few things to check on my iPhone for the time I give to it. For instance, when standing around in lines, etc. I might check something-- FF, e-mail, Twitter-- again, even though I know nothing's happened since the last time I logged in.

Which makes me wonder: what can the iPhone offer me that I'm not taking advantage of yet? There's definitely room for one more daily app for me. It used to be Pownce, but without that service in my life anymore, there's an empty hole!

Andy, you're welcome. I see comments regarding FriendFeed, both good and bad, from around the Web. It is disappointing to me to see people who I know have great blogs or good activity on other services grow frustrated with the service I happen to like quite a bit. They have some room to grow, and I hope they are thinking quite a bit about the abandoned, inactive, accounts issue.

Hi Louis, thanks for the link and the EXTREMELY well thought-out article. You give me hope for FriendFeed yet! I can't disagree with anything you say here, except I'd just like to suggest that the service has got to be careful when courting inactive users-- one of the most annoying things to me is when a service I haven't used in three months suddenly sends me a notification about some incremental update of theirs. (I've marked messages like this, especially on repeat offenses with no clear unsubscribe options, as spam in Gmail, so it's really not doing these companies any good as far as I'm concerned!)

Of course, a conscientious drive to engage inactive users is a great idea.

I'd also like to see some sort of filter on the posting end. I would be curious to know what'd happen if users labeled their updates as "personal," "professional," etc. as I would love to be able to separate these streams (as I've remarked to you before). Unfortunately, putting this burden on the shoulders of the submitter is unreliable at best and a tool for spamming at worst.

I know that sentiment well. I see in an earlier comment you think
FriendFeed has the best community you've ever encountered in a social
network-- I felt the same way about Pownce back when they were slamming that
site (and it was still alive). Gotta be a champion for the causes you
believe in!
I used to get a lot of utility out of FriendFeed, and then something
changed. Perhaps I should try and put my finger on what...

Great predictions, Louis! Your thought about the White House site is particularly interesting and I think could turn out to be quite accurate. I'm sure that the government will be beefing up physical security for President Obama-- hopefully they'll be sure to do the same online, as well.

Not sure about the real-time Web yet, though, myself-- although I certainly see its value as a novelty (and if even Facebook is offering a real-time view, it's got to be worth considering), I agree that it'll be difficult to make it useable. We'll see.

Major alternative to FeedBurner, eh? Does ReadBurner have anything planned? Don't know why that comes to mind, probably because the names are so familiar!

Good driver fast lanes would be awesome, and more challenging too! Get
bumped, and you're relegated to the "B" lane. License plates and
licenses would be color coded to show your ability to access said
"premium" lanes. And a black market would evolve in buying the lanes
at a higher bracket. It could get ugly fast. :-)

Hmm, that's an interesting thought! When I think of my own record (clean but more like 5 years instead of 15!), the reason I've had an accident-free history is BECAUSE I drive slower rather than faster. I think if my record increased my own personal speed limit cap, I'd find myself in just as many mishaps as everyone else!

That's funny, we should institute "good driver" fast lanes! Woohoo!

Andy, good to know you've got my back. It's tempting to argue with law
enforcement that due to my previous 'perfect' record and spotless,
accident-free, history should enable me to drive more quickly than
those with less perfect records. Egotistically, I'd claim that I
should be permitted to drive 15-20 miles an hour over the limit (which
still wouldn't help me in this case). :-)
