I think there are a few other ways that people turn the Bible into an idol too - some of our "infallibility" arguments concerning the Bible come awfully close to being "divinity" arguments (not "Word of the Divine" arguments).

in Christ,
jW

Re: a douthwaite says — Behold, the latest addition to the Chapel of St....

What the......

Re: Teaching your church to Tweet

Please do, Brian. Some of us work for a salary, some of us work for an hourly wage, and yet others work as contractors to get a job done, and still others yet work in hopes that someday they will sell what they've been working on.

Don Miller has some really interesting thoughts on how the Industrial Age changed our ideas on work, not necessarily for the better, in his talk "Free Market Jesus". Basically, he advocates a return to a family-run small business. I'm not sure that's always the best way to go.

No answers here, but compelled thoughts. Thanks!

in Christ,
jW

Re: Do Lutheran bigots ban adulterers too? How about gluttons?

John. I realize that this will not assuage your angst about this, but I did want to respond. Adultery is seen as sex outside of marriage and is therefore the same issue in Lutheran theology as homosexual sexual activity would be. Gluttony is the same actually. The specific issue in this case (which is different than the specific issue of why women are not ordained in the LCMS) is one of practicing an action which is considered sinful over and over again. It would also bar someone from the clergy if they continually gossiped, abused their wife, stole items from the grocery store, etc. The lobster thing was reversed by God as an inclusion to the Gentiles in Acts 10.

But that's really not the heart of your post...at least I don't think so. It sounds more like the heart of your post is that you feel that your identity is being persecuted. To that, I wanted to let you know that your identity is the same as mine, as John Roth's, or any other human being when it comes to Lutheran theology. We recognize that we are all stained by sin in one way or another. My sin is no worse than yours, but it is all bad. That's why Jesus died so that those sins would be forgiven. Our identity in that forgiveness, is no longer so much concerned with itself, but it is centered around God and His Word. We believe that our leaders should be good examples of that Word, but we don't believe that it makes our leaders any less sinful - just that they choose to battle against acting upon those sins. And it still doesn't work 100% of the time. I still need forgiveness just like anyone else.

I hope this helps to clear it up a little. I do apologize if you were hurt. That has never been the intention of this position in our church. I'm willing to talk whenever.

in Christ,
jW - jwinters.com

Re: Ten years from now

Thanks jmasschke. If I look back at 10 years ago, I was in a bit of a quandary myself and I too have to fight that feeling that I'm not making a difference - and even worse, sometimes I actually have to bite the bullet and say "that thing that I just did, it didn't make a difference in anyone's life." But generally it's a good list to focus around again, to gain your bearings.

Andrew - yep, duly noted about the "questions," just used the wrong word.

in Christ,
jW

Re: Itching

Thanks for the reblog, brother. I guess Jesus summed it up when He told us that there was a wide way and a narrow one. I would say it probably goes to how radical of a change your solution would propose. Luther's change was one that he thought was able to work in the scheme of reforming, but it turned out that he had to leave (which is more of a revolutionary move). Like evangelism, context tells you so much that you can never say "this always works".

Thanks for the comment!

in Christ,
jW

Re: jWinters.com

Great link, thanks! Good to hear this went well...I laughed at "ecclesiastical alma mater". Thanks for the reflections on "The Jesus". Yeah, it's tough to keep it fresh some of the time. I usually try to see what the big problem is, and then see how Jesus fits that specific problem - i.e. if the problem is that you're running away, Jesus chases after you.

Enjoy the trial and error. If so, then that changes the conception of the project.

Just some random thoughts.
