That metric could be driven much more by quantity of posts rather than quality, for instance, and thus has very little relevance to the performance of the account. Engagement rates over time should really be established by an average engagement per post. With your numbers showing just over 21k engagements per post, the engagement rate they are hitting is probably closer to 3-5% (depending on how many followers they had at the time of each post). That sounds like pretty average engagement to me.

Re:

The Republicans are trying to pass smaller bills for the programs they like so there is less pressure on congress to do the right thing and pass a clean bill that gets all government services running again. They are holding everyone hostage to try to get only the things they want while everyone suffers, which is not how our government should work. Pass a clean bill, get everyone back to work, and then use normal congressional procedures to cut back programs that are inefficient.

Re: Just one more reason to love Patrick Rothfuss

This made me very happy.

Re: How to Calculate the Value of a Like

Again, for all of these, you are assuming the only measurable value of FB is as a direct marketing channel. If that is your assumption (or even if you are saying that's the easiest to measure it), then you need to say that clearly, rather than telling everyone that the only thing that matter on their page, regardless of business model, is the number of clicks and conversions. You aren't computing the value of a like for any FB page, you are computing the average value of a fan who clicks through to a site that sells something, and those are far different things.

Re: How to Calculate the Value of a Like

There are three broad problems with this post and the formula you are using:

1) You offer no details as to why the variables you included are the correct ones (why is churn included if your formula is really all about clicks to site) and why you've neglected to include other variables (like the engagement or virality of a post that may have exposed it to a larger audience).

2)You assume every brand should treat their Facebook or Twitter account as just another direct marketing channel, and thus all that matters are clicks to site. CPG brands don't sell products at their site generally, for instance, and thus clicks to site are practically irrelevant. Local restaurants can use FB to remind fans of upcoming specials or menu changes, and would rarely drive traffic to their main site. I'd argue there are far fewer brands that use FB to drive site traffic than the ones who don't.

3) You don't account for the fact that most of a brand's fans are already regular customers, and are probably much more inclined to purchase that brand in the future. Facebook and Twitter are communication channels, and if they disappeared tomorrow, the value of those fans would not disappear -- they would simply interact with the brand in a different way.

Taking all of these into account, I encourage any author who claims to have the value of Facebook and Twitter nailed down to a formula to consider the broader implications of those channels and how different brands use them.

Re: Twitter beats Facebook in social media Olympics

What Iain said: that 97% figure means absolutely nothing, as almost all FB posts are private. Unless your monitoring tool is "friends" with all 900 million people on Facebook, there's no way to know how many mentions there were there.

Re: Never Trust Sentiment Accuracy Claims

1. Definitely agree that providers rig the numbers in their favor using various techniques. I can build a sentiment analysis system that only looks for instances of "I love X [product]" or "I hate [product]" and score those as positive and negative respectively, leave everything else as neutral, and achieve 95% accuracy. But that doesn't mean I've solved a problem.

2. Agree (in most cases) that accuracy is a distraction. It's still needed, however, if I'm basing a decision on the analysis of the data -- I'd prefer a system that is 80% accurate over one that is 50% (or worse).

3. Completely disagree on your belief that automated sentiment analysis can become "super-human." You're confusing things that a machine can do or determine that are generally objective -- driving a car, answering questions on Jeopardy, and even looking for patterns in text that expose relationships -- with something that is subjective. The difference is there is no "correct" answer here that is evident from the text itself (which is the only data point in almost all cases). If I type, "boy I reeealllyy loved the Avengers," is that a positive statement or a (sarcastic) negative one? You don't know unless you ask me or can read my mind, and there is nothing you (or a machine) can do with that text to determine the "truth." The best you can do is try to interpret as well as a human. In fact it could be argued that the whole point here is to determine whether readers of these statements interpret them as positive or negative (social media swaying opinion), not whether they actually "are."

Re: shrimpfriedBRYCE - Colorado Doctor Finds Foot In Newborn's Brain

NOM NOM NOM

Re: Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden

This is exactly what I'm talking about:
http://firstread.msnbc.msn....

No one from the McCain camp stepping forward and saying it's wrong to shout out "kill him," instead they attack Obama for even suggesting that the hatred coming from these crowds is troubling. Don't pretend there aren't people out there looking for an excuse to kill him. I have no doubt he has associations with Ayers, but that is more a symptom of living in a city where both men were working to help poor people than Obama's desire to hang out with a former nutjob. Palin and her family are associated with an organization that wants to secede from the US, but you don't see the Obama campaign calling her a terrorist or encouraging hate toward her. If either of you really believe that he's some terrorist sympathizer out to destroy America then there's really no point in having a logical conversation, because you've gone off the deep end. Hate him because he's a liberal or black or has a funny name if you want, but the terrorist thing makes as much sense as dinosaurs and humans walking the planet together.

Re: Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden

Ayers was awarded Citizen of the Year in 1997 in Chicago for his work helping the community. Pot, meet kettle. The whole narrative of this campaign is that McCain has thrown out any semblance of straight talk and has resorted to innuendo and flat out lying to try to get elected, airing ads about sex ed for children and lipstick on a pig, while lying about Obama's planned tax cuts. At least the point of this Obama ad -- that McCain isn't familiar with using a computer -- is true. Is it relevant? Considering the challenges this country faces after 8 years of mismanagement, probably not. But show me one McCain ad that has aired in the last month that has been truthful or about the issues. He's the one that dragged this race into the mud, not Obama.

Re: Why Doesn’t John McCain Use a Computer?

#1 If McCain couldn't use a computer because he can't sit down and type, I guarantee that would have been the initial response from his campaign weeks ago when his lack of computer knowledge was first revealed, rather than the awkward response his campaign did give.

#2 McCain has already said that he is learning to use a computer and get online, and he hasn't ever claimed that he can't sit down and type.

#3 So you're really saying you think he can sit at a desk and write with a pen, and he can obviously use a keyboard on a mobile phone, but can't sit and type on a computer keyboard?

Leave it to the right to attack Obama for an ad that is actually truthful and has been admitted as true by the McCain campaign, while they constantly put out attack ads against Obama that are flat out lies. I hope you're proud to support a campaign that feels the only way it can win is to lie about the opposition. Obama doesn't support sex ed for children, his tax plan will save lower and middle class families more money than McCain's, and the lipstick on a pig thing is just ridiculous. The difference here is that it was a petty, and factual incorrect smear."

Not factually incorrect, 2 years ago she was mayor of a tiny town (yes, a stop along the way, but this is 2006 we're talking about, not 20 years ago). She has 0 foreign policy experience. And being the governor of a state with a very small population for 18 months is pretty limited "executive experience." And McCain has been far more negative (effectively so) than Obama, any pundit would agree with that statement.

Of course Biden and Hilary questioned his experience, they were running against him and it's a fair attack. His lack of experience is troublesome to me as well, though in his case I do think it has resulted in a politician who has not been corrupted.

80% approval rate or not (this is a repub governor in a thoroughly red state after all), McCain is not a young man and has his share of medical issues.
