It means a lot.

I've been through the same trepidations about going so public with not only me with my silly t-shirt pics, magazine interviews, and otherwise opening up about my business, but especially pictures and videos about my family. I finally got over the concerns and felt that the new level closeness that we can achieve with people from all over the world far outweighs them. I really do feel that opening up and being real with both personal and business stuff has been a really good thing for me.

Your reply here exemplifies that as much as anything else.

Even though you and I haven't met, I liked you from the start thanks to the Red Sox hat and your friendly online persona. I do hope to meet in person someday.

As for "brand involvement" there was just one failed attempt. I forget who it was, but if I remember correctly someone wished me a happy birthday triggered from some post about Jason. I'm sure more of that will come soon.

Congrats again on your own new baby!

Re: Geek Birth 2008 and Social Media

Hey Scott .. I tried again. The new form is a little counter intuitive
about logging in and posting comment.

Got it this time!

Joe

Re: Geek Birth 2008 and Social Media

what's going on Joe? As you know, I have also been through the experience of having a baby (Lily - born Sunday 8/17) and using the social networks as a tool for communicating the goings on.

I too received warm wishes and congratulations (from you personally - thanks!) ... & from those that I interact with on twitter, facebook etc.. family, friends and even distant friends from years ago were up to date immediately. There was a slight sense of hesitancy on my part about publishing the event, and I have previously held back video posting with my two year old Sierra to avoid "overexposing" my family. However, I felt that this occasion was a perfect use for our new world of communication.

There have been some things written about the upcoming generations and the impact of the internet, gaming et al and how it might increase anti-social behaviors by encouraging less personal face to face interaction. Our recent experiences prove that interactions can be straight up personal if you want them to be..... just in a different form. You and I could never have experienced the births of each others children in real time, unless we just happened to be neighbors.

For that .. I am thankful to you and your wife for letting me be involved. Thank her personally for me. I will always take an interest in how Jason Thomas is progressing through life's stages of infant > toddler > young man.

Of course, I can't keep my brain from going to the business side of things! I haven't been able to get past the lack of " brand involvement". Let me first say that I don't want to pollute the streams and would hate to see too much unfiltered insertion of brands ... but, did you see any brands pick up on the fact that you were having a baby? I didn't. They sure know how to do it at the hospital ... we were sent home with our Similac bag of samples and Pampers diapers. If I were in their shoes I'd be watching the streams for mentions of babies being born, and reach out in some way..... maybe a coupon code or community invite of some kind.

Glad you are all doing well. Hopefully your other kids have accepted this new being in the home .. Sierra gave Lily a "tour" of her room, toys etc.. so she is more comfortable with someone dividing our attention.

See you online....

Re: Geek Birth 2008 and Social Media

Re: Geek Birth 2008 and Social Media

Re: Geek Birth 2008 and Social Media

Type your comment here.

Re: Merchandise

A "true baseball scholar" - that's a great description. Now this is how you use these Social Media tools to monitor your brand and stay informed about the conversation that is taking place about you right now!!

I swear this is real ... this was not a plant where I contacted Kira to leave a comment so I could demonstrate how to use this powerful medium. Kira found this blog post that I made on her own. Not only has Kira demonstrated that she can use Twitter to effectively provide excellent customer service support, but she is probably using Google Alerts (subject for another post) to stay informed about any time that her keywords show up in a post.

Once again, hats off Kira .. great work.

Re: Wisdom for July 15, 2008

Way to go JBinATL!!! We started posting the scoreboards back on Opening Day and batter by batter we went through all the way up to today's final post at the All-Star break.

The game is one of the all time favorites if only for the great calls by the announcers .. Both Vin Scully and Jack Buck gave us call that last forever.

Gibson's home run off of Dennis Eckersley changed the course of that series as the A's were considered dominant favorites over the ragtag Dodgers. The beleagured A's never recovered!

Re: Legendary | Baseballisms July 6, 2008

Hi Beth ... That's an excellent guess, and we did consider that one! The game that we are doing IS a postseason game, but its from an earlier decade than the 2004 ALCS.

Keep guessing and the hints will keep on coming!

Re: Legendary | Baseballisms July 2, 2008

Hi Fols24 ... you are the first person who has pointed out that we have an actual real game going on here! Guess it goes back to the original topic of conversation ... I do believe there is a need for a business video service then, maybe Fliqz can capitalize on this need. All brands are going to be using the video communication medium for customers & employees even. Businesses should take their "About us" page and make an interesting video for it .... it needs to be easily uploaded, hosted and embedded by some service.

Thanks for your insights Shawn .. appreciate all you do!

Re: GeekCast 22: iPhone 2.0 and It’s Still Useless

Hi Joe -

You give Fliqz the image and they embed it into the player. In my case, I already had logos on the videos, so they just made that area clickable for me.

As far as Blip, they booted me a week or so ago for having commercial content. My videos were answers to questions on affiliate marketing with nothing by an open/close that had the url: askshawncollins.com where people could ask the questions.

I appealed and they never responded.

Re: GeekCast 22: iPhone 2.0 and It’s Still Useless

Thanks Shawn .. I'll look at them right now to compare features. Do you embed that watermark at the time of upload? .. I'm just doing it when prepping the video (not clickable though). It's possible that Blip discourages "serious" business content - which is what Jim is saying -- but haven't heard they don't like my content (did I say that out loud?)

Re: GeekCast 22: iPhone 2.0 and It’s Still Useless

Hey Joe -

Have you checked out Fliqz.com? I'm with you on the need for specific business video posting / embedding service (you talked about this with Steve on Video Ninjas too) with intentions of a customizable branded player, flexibility regarding ad rev or not, distribution controls, uptimes, specific audiences, etc.

Do you find the Blip.tv pro account handles these requirements for you?

For me the most important thing is the embedded use on my sites with my own branding on the player.. not necessarily relying on them to max the eyeball count (although I'll take anything they can drive to me - but the private setting is also avail). I consider it my job to get the traffic from all the other sources and the embedded video is a close/call to action.

Are there other features for you that I'm not considering?

Thanks.

PS .. once again another great mid-sentence instant ending! It's almost like a weekly cliffhanger ..lol

Re: FriendFeed + GTalk = Twitter Alternative?

Hey Joe-

Nope, it worked right out of the box with me.
