In the end, I got to the fraud department through the number on the card, and they asked me if I had recently bought toys at some big toy place in New York. Since I'm in California, it was easy to say no. I was also quite amazed they would do such a cold call.

I had only used that card once that year, at Knotts Berry Farm Restaurant. The same thing happened when Macs came out and people played with those pretty colors. Where are those people now? That's why I've stayed on the back end databases, it simply seems silly to compete against every high school student with a PC. Shared information is on a higher level of abstraction.

For the long term, you have to learn the basics and be able to think and adapt. "Here's a nickel, kid, go buy yourself a computer."

The demand curve is all out of whack. When it normalizes and people go after the next shiny thing, only those who truly love what they do, that happens to be a long-term skill, will keep doing it. The rest will go off on a "journey of self discovery" (read: parents basement) and eventually get some crappy job.

Re: Don't panic. When I got a new Heater/AC, I didn't think to specify the filter size, and of course they changed it. So I had the now-useless expensive filter sitting in the basement. And of course they always start beeping at 3AM, but this one was a puzzler, took days to figure out where the sound was coming from, after I changed the battery in the smoke detector. (Actually my house has 2 H/AC, and they both have different sizes than the original, and they threw away one of my expensive filters after I said to keep it. Grr. )

My CO detector has an evil orange glow.

Re: Etsy CTO: Prioritizing Diversity in Our Hiring Fielded Better Women ... and Men

It agrees with my personal observation in the '80's in midsize computer environments.
