Although I am not gay, it is obvious that being gay is worse than being Black in today's society.

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

Happy Birthday, Rikrah (belated).

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

Happy Birthday!

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

I doubt that this one talks.

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

i had already weakened and bought it the other week..

UNLESS....this is the one that talks for $8?

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

Rikyrah,
Target now has the Princess Tiana doll on sale for $8!

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

it's challenging, because I wonder what I would do in the same situation....would I begin to live life, as folks are doing here, based upon what they THINK is the future?

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

I watched.

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

Unfortunately, it doesn't start here until Nov 20th. My 27 year old nephew has it and he has to have a whole body blood transfer every 5 weeks. It is unbelievable what he has to endure. My sister and her husband were both tested for the trait, but her husband was misdiagnosed.

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

they test african americans automatically now. in the past this wasn't the case. so it is very rare that one wouldn't know if they have the trait. but to your point about prevention, you would be surprised at the amount of people who know they have the trait & still have children. if they saw someone in a crisis they would rethink that decision long & hard.

Re: Afternoon Open Thread

We also need to be tested for the trait before we have children--males & females. When both parents have the trait, a sickle cell child will most likely be born. Prevention is a necessity.

Re: Wednesday Open Thread

They are out there but it appears there are more here in U.S.:

From How Serial Killers Work

According to a recent FBI study, there have been approximately 400 serial killers in the United States in the past century, with anywhere from 2,526 to 3,860 victims [source: Hickey]. However, there's no way to really know how many serial killers are active at any point in time -- experts have suggested numbers ranging from 50 to 300, but there's no evidence to support them.

Serial murders also appear to have increased over the past 30 years. Eighty percent of the 400 serial killers of the past century have emerged since 1950 [source: Vronsky]. Why this is happening is a question of some debate; there is no answer, just as there is no simple answer as to why some people become serial killers.

Re: Wednesday Open Thread

I once read that there are usually 100 serial killers operating worldwide and that
they only occur in industrialized countries.

Re: Roy DeCarava dies at 89; art photographer depicted the African American experience

Same here.
