I've always been impressed with some designers that employ code and generative modeling ie Nervous System, but I've never had any desire to learn to code and do it myself.

Follow me on my train of thought. I've played a bit of No Man Sky and have enjoyed it, but the worlds which are generative designed feel "coded" to me. It seems I can sense the algorithms behind the design versus the product of a directly designed world (could be a placebo effect). One could argue the one who designs the algorithms designs the world, but it seems one step removed. I may be a bit biased being an industrial designer, but the use of generative design for aesthetic uses feels shallow to me. At least in this case. In Nervous System's case they are directly "designing" the code to design the part.

Now the use for structural purposes seems brilliant to me. Understanding forces and materials far beyond what I would care to try to understand, I'd gladly ask for help from the Generative Design Gods above me in the Autodesk Clouds.

Re: /Filmcast Ep. 311 - It Follows - /Film

Yea, get back to interesting subjects like soup.

Re: /Filmcast Ep. 311 - It Follows - /Film

It Follows sounds great, as in the Disasterpeace soundtrack I've been listening to per Devindra's recommendation. Looking forward to seeing the film too, but will have to wait till blu-ray. Great review guys.

Re: Onshape Comes Out Swinging, Changes MCAD Pricing Forever

I have been motivated lately to get my hands into some of these cloudy CAD systems, partly because of the sentiment you relayed in the last sentence. I listened to the non spoiler section of the review a week ago and listened to the spoiler section this morning on my commute. A couple thoughts, I'll try to be concise.

I saw the teaser for this last year and never watched a full trailer for it, being in the Cannata anti-trailer camp (I closed my eyes and hummed half-way thru the Chappie trailer- looks so good). I was hesitant to even listen to the non-spoiler review, but you guys do a good job of keeping it pretty vague- thanks.

So my expectations were lowered a bit going into the film because of your review. Ended up really loving the film!

My review of the review, my response to the response.

I think I liked it more than anyone on the show. It's great when somebody is on there responding with the same thoughts I'm saying in my head (like Devindra's response to Jeff's robot critique- thank you!), but it's nobody's fault when this doesn't happen, just unfortunate. I think that some of the strong (and insensitive/dumb) responses you get are a result of this. When you feel unrepresented in a review you feel the need to speak.

But most importantly (for everyone), if you are in a theater watching a scene that is suppose to evoke a strong emotional response and it completely fails for you, don't laugh out loud. If you did, you just destroyed that moment for someone else (who probably has children- HA! I joke).

Keep up the good work filmcast crew, love the show.

Re: How Much Should You Charge as a Freelance Product Designer? I've been working on a big freelance project this year in which I collaborate with another solidworks wielding IDer in the Neverlands, show updates to the client, and send links to vendors for RFQ's. Good so far. Private links for sharing files, which require no sign up (like dropbox) has been key to getting vendors to use it.

Re: Sharing is Caring: How Real CAD Users Share Data

Get Josh's hair wet and I'm sure it's muskrat like...

Re: Boat Manufacturer Puts Polycarbonate to the Test With Transparent Sea Kayak Design

I saw these down at Surf Expo this year, pretty impressive in person.

Re: #DesignFail: iPhone 6 Users Reporting Bent Phones…From Sitting

I think the problem lies with skinny jeans...

Re: We Got Up Close and Personal With Local Motors' 3D Printed Car

Did it say anywhere the final weight of the Strati?

Re: Local Motors Takes Their Single-Print 3D Printed Car for a Test Drive

Emmm, need access to this BAAM you refer too. It's amazing the amount of changes I've seen in Workbench in less then a year. Getting direct emails from Hardi and the customer service team has been great. These interactions reinforce the feeling I'm dealing with a small team committed to their product and users. Hopefully that sense doesn't change.

Re: When Product Design Goes Viral: 'Coolest Cooler' on Track to Set All-Time Kickstarter Funding Record

Yea, I'll kickstart that cooler.
