That's all a cold call is. However, the frustration comes in large part from what I would call "blind calling". No prequalification, no attempt to connect, no research just dialing until you get a bite.

You did clarify how you defined cold calling yourself in the post but I would expand the definition to say even after I've prequalified and researched, as long as they don't expect my call or don't know me yet, it's cold.

Re: 9 Step Plan To Use Social Media To Hack Your Cold-Calling Nightmare

As someone who cold calls every day I don't think it's unnecessary. It's how I sell and I'm good at generating new prospects through it and I'm also good at closing sales I get from cold calling. I still get the feeling of dread from time to time when I sit down to call (because I'm human) but I don't view it as a waste of time.

However, for my profession I use a lot of the tools you mentioned above to warm up the calls so it's not quite such a waste of time and I stand a much better chance of getting those appointments.

For example I use our company's BusinessWise account to get those "Glengarry" leads. I also make a point of connecting on twitter and especially on LinkedIn and if I can, Foursquare. It's just putting the personal and local touch on what I'm presenting as a salesperson but more importantly as a fellow professional in Atlanta.

Re: 9 Step Plan To Use Social Media To Hack Your Cold-Calling Nightmare

Third place is YOU'RE FIRED.

Re: 4 ways professionals can maximize the free tool Foursquare…

I'm new to foursquare but it's been fun for me and I'm trying to start leveraging it to get some exposure to BroadRiver. But I also love the fact that I can promote other businesses in the Atlanta area that I support and get some word out on places that may go somewhat unnoticed as well as learn about new venues.

Great post as usual, Taryn!

~jb

Re: Coachability

Good thoughts, Keenan. I'm a sales person that is rather new to my company right now. Learning a new system and especially the new industry that I'm in now is a real challenge. I've learned that keeping an open mind and being ok with "falling forward" are part of the process. This post really challenged me to think about my demeanor toward learning my craft.

JB

Re: What I've Been Up To

Get a mac. I've got to do a little "gut checking" from time to time myself. Sometimes that's all it takes just to get the ship back in the right direction but often times my lack of effort is a lack of courage.

Re: Sales “Tough Guy” Problem

I have definitely had my fill of "tough guy" salepeople who think the bulldog mentality gets it done. However, I will say in my own personal sales career I've found where toughness really does work.... on myself. That's not to say I beat myself up and bring a joyless boot camp mentality to my work. But I have to choose to work hard AND smart every day but be kind and solutions minded with my customers.

Great post! As a new father that has gone through job changes in 2009, I really related to your story. I find it hard to balance life, work, family sometimes but it's a challenge I'm up for as being a husband and dad has brought me so much joy already.

I did want to share a thought with you if I may. You're talking about goals for this coming year and mentioned yours is to be "the best husband and father ever". However, one way of looking at goals I've always liked is "a dream with a plan and a deadline". For example, I too want to be the best husband and father I can be. But I've put together a specific goal of holding a family meeting with my wife (a plan) once a week for a least an hour (with a deadline). To me this makes me a better husband because I'm planning my family life with my wife and spending time alone face to face with her. It makes me a better father because I'm talking with her about plans for raising our child, how to handle issues we face etc.

That's not to sound critical of your goals but I'd like to encourage you to come up with some specific things you can do within your family that will make you the best husband and father ever.

Consider me a new reader though. I enjoyed the post and look forward to hearing about your 2010.

Thanks!

Jaq Baldwin

Re: 5 Business Books Every Business Owner Should Have

Some classics here to revisit if you've read before. They're my favorites in different ways.

Murph left when I was 10 years old. I love him primarily out of a sense of nostaglia because he first sparked my love for baseball.

Smoltz however was introduced to me at the age of 7 and 11 years later he's been like a big brother or hero I've admired from the stands as I grew into a young man.

They play very different roles in my development as not only a Braves fan but as one who holds a great affection for the game.

Re: If Smoltz Walks Out… He’s Taking My Battered and Bloody Heart With Him

Deep down I think you're right. It's not an impact move but it's a move to get a proven starter who has remained healthy for years. I believe he'll be a #3 but with all the DL time we had last year, adding someone who most likely get us 30 starts will be very nice.

Re: Braves Set to Pick Up Vazquez

Hey Eddie!
