It's literally an office, but much more diverse than your typical one. And you get a bit of exposure to some pretty innovative thought patterns, kind of like on a good blog (like yours). It's almost like everything I like about the internet brought into the real world and harnessed for productivity.

Re: thanksgiving, part 2

I think you were pretty much on target. I like that you tied your second comment here into the poverty/working class wage stagnation.

Maybe that's the biggest problem -- that our entire economic paradigm is riding on people continually ramping up their spending while their wages stay roughly the same. I like what you did with the topic.

Re: thanksgiving, part 2

I was thinking of shopping and material acquisitions when I wrote it, but your mention of technology is a whole other world worth looking at. It reminds me of the time the remote control got lost, and my niece literally didn't know how to change the channel, volume or turn off the tv.

I remember hearing statements like "this generation will be the first to grow up with no idea what it was like before [insert earth-shattering advancement here]" -- I used to think that was a good thing, but that's when I was young and I didn't know how right the teachers were when they scolded us for using calculators too much, warning that we needed to know how to do things for ourselves. I'm wonder how stunted our entire society would be if we suddenly had to do without cell phones or our online infrastructure for a day, or even a few hours!

Re: vectors (jfdi)

Thank you, Frank -- that's incredibly flattering. The eulogy was really just a reading of the post I wrote a couple weeks ago. We finally had a local memorial for Mrs. Styer on Saturday. It was good to see so many familiar faces, though it would have been better with at least one more.

Re: mom away from mom

Thank you, Bill. It's great to hear from you! I absolutely remember you, and yes, I'm going tomorrow. It will be great to see you and, I imagine, a few other people I haven't seen in years.

As far as being oblivious, I get that -- I usually miss things as they happen too. What's the old quote about life? It's best understood backward, but must be lived forward.

Re: pounding pavement

Thanks, Johannan - I thought I'd sent you a note on one in the last month or so. Thanks for anything you can find out.

Re: Six Bucks and Random Acts of Kindness

Nice story. I saw something last week that was similar in a sideways fashion.

I was in the McDonalds at 10th & Market last Tuesday with my paper and a bagel when a homeless man approached and asked for money for a drink. I gave it to him because I figured I had it, and maybe because I found the irony of his request refreshing.

He went to the counter and bought a Coke, then sat down at a table near me with his soda. A few minutes later, another homeless man was making the rounds of the restaurant asking for a little change. The guy I had given two bucks to called him over and handed him what must have been the change from his soda purchase.

It wasn't much, but it reminded me of that old Bible parable of the poor widow giving the few pennies she had after the rich man made a show of his gift in the temple.

Of course, the homeless guy who'd surrendered his last few coins to another indigent man got up a few minutes later and asked yet another customer for fifty cents to buy a loose cigarette.

It was either the cycle of charity, or just a nice moment while it lasted.

Re: mom away from mom

i hope so, Frank. i like to think i gleaned something from the experience. hopefully, along with the capacity to recognize that kindness in others i've learned to be more like her myself.

Re: mom away from mom

thank you, and i'm glad you've found similar people in your life! i was, and continue to be, fortunate beyond belief. there may be a few parts of life i would have preferred to bypass, but for the most part its been a parade of people who treat me pretty well for reasons i can't always figure out.

Re: new experiences

I might actually enjoy that too ;)

Re: democracy’s chorus

thank you, Sarah

Re: democracy’s chorus

i wonder if they've turned off the electorate too. i'm sure they have,
actually, but i think you're right check out this po-- that may be the
whole plan. another post i read this morning that reinforced that:
http://paradox1x.org/archiv...

(i know, i tend to agree with folks who quote me, but the haiku isn't meant
to focus on the cynicism)

Re: new experiences

I can relate to the cave feeling -- and thanks!

Re: new experiences

oh, don't tempt me -- leave it up to me, and i'll start pretending i work there, kind of like that Milton character from Office Space ;)

Re: new experiences

the pleasure was at least half mine, probably much more.

i'm toying w/the idea that i might start doing wall haiku on a commission basis ;)

Re: What’s the Earliest a Civilized Person Should Mow His Grass on the Weekend?

When I was a kid, my father made me use the manual mower -- because he didn't trust me with anything that had a blade rotating at more than 100 rpm. When I got older, he let me use the gas-powered model, but made me mow five times as much.

As for morning mowing decorum, I concur with 10 am. Unfortunately the landscaping guys they have where I live seem to think it's somewhere south of 7. But at least they don't work weekends ;)

Re: Ms. Adderall (drives out the demons)

oh, indeed. i'm not usually so over the top, so to my regular readers, i almost apologize ;)

Re: Overslept

I'm absent-minded enough without rushing, so the advice is especially fitting for me ;)

Re: Overslept

I like that too.
