Procrastinatrix, those ads have been showing up in my Yahoo account as well. How depressing that I can't even check my email without the patriarchy reminding me that I don't measure up to impossible beauty standards.

Jesus, that video is offensive.

Shorter CNN commentators: "Michael Phelps is hot! He has a bazillion gold medals! He's going to be totally rich! Why wouldn't that hussy want to fuck him? I totally want to fuck him, because he's all famous and rich and dreamy and shit! I mean, it's not like the godly Michael Phelps would ever want to fuck such a dirty, filthy whore -- she takes any chance she can find to take her clothes off, the trampy little slut, haha! -- but that doesn't mean she shouldn't want to fuck him!"

They spend 3.5 minutes dissing her, and then at the very end throw in the fact that she apologized, but the reaction to that is: "He should still totally hate her because she's a snotty bitch and he's way better than her." That is just infuriating.

When I first saw the photo on the right I didn't even realize it was Beyonce! The lightened skin combined with the other photoshopping techniques they've used have made her nearly unrecognizable. Why anyone would want to change one single feature of the face on the left is beyond my comprehension.

Excellent post. I've noticed over the last few months, among my friends, family and acquaintances, the person I know who has been most interested in the primaries and the upcoming election is a man from England who's currently living in Germany (he's an Obama fanatic). It makes me sad (and irritated) that the dozens of people I know in the US are not nearly as interested as one of only a few Europeans I know.

JoAsakura: I know it doesn't matter as far as the effects of what he's saying. But the optimist in me is thinking, if he really believes it, presumably he has reasons for doing so, and so maybe if given reasons to the contrary his mind could be changed? Like if he actually met an autistic person, or spoke to a doctor who specializes in autism or something.

I'm probably giving him way too much credit though, aren't I? After all nothing I've ever heard from him gives any indication that he's a reasonable person.

Just curious -- I don't know enough about him to make a guess (mostly because everything I've ever heard makes me want to scream and punch), but do you suppose he actually believes his own bullshit, or that he's more like a Coulter type who will say anything for publicity? Not that either would excuse this vile crap -- it's wrong and sick and hateful no matter why he does it -- but I was just wondering.

OtherCara, I think you have a point, but I bet there are even some conservatives with autistic children who won't be too pleased with Savage's professional diagnosis, despite all the compelling factual evidence he provides.

Thanks for the tips, mustella and Carolyn. I'll have to start researching orchids and find out if there are any that can thrive despite periodic neglect and being occasionally knocked over by rambunctious children. :)

Thanks for the info, Carolyn. The fact that my in-laws successfully grow their orchids (the chocolate kind and a couple of others) has never led me to believe that I could grow them, since they have much greener thumbs than I do. I'm quite good at appreciating plants but only mediocre at growing them. :)

Orchids are the most amazing plants -- all so different and specialized and uniquely adapted. Not to mention beautiful. Also, my in-laws have some that smell like chocolate. That's like the pinnacle of evolution right there.

I've commented here a few times, but I consider myself a lurker anyway, since I prefer to read and listen and learn and think rather than embarrass myself in front of all the smarty-pants posters and commenters around here by opening my mouth. :) This is hands down the best blog on teh Internetz.
