That wants an iPhone app
2. That wants to provide an app that the majority of handsets can interact with.

The problem with iPhone apps is there limited market penetration, although yes they look absolutely great (in general) and therefore marketeers love them.

The problem with developing any other apps is, that they arent iPhone apps but from a brand perspective can give you a broader reach.

So what are our customers doing if they want a nice interactive piece of content, that can be accessed by a normob? Asking us to develop a WAP site! Most operators (at least in Ireland anyway) have capped 99cent per day offerings are the public are now used to interacting with brands that way, and you get to deliver a media rich experience which on a per campaign basis (such as a movie launch) ticks all the major boxes.

Of course one could argue that using WAP is a step back, although this could be true from a technology point of view, when you consider the Normob, they dont care or know how they are getting the experience they just want to get it.... :)

Re: Vodafone needs to use Voodoo to boost sales of Blackberry Storm

I have been using it for months now, and you may have already done this but the firmware update does help with the battery although still not amazing.

Dont even start me on the keyboard.....as I have said before this is my first Blackberry device and I would imagine if I had been used to their standard keyboard before I would have found the touch interface sorely lacking :(

And I sooooo wanted this device to kick the iPhones ass :( :(

Re: If you’re going to the States, get approved before you fly

Hi Ewan,

It is indeed the replacement for that annoying piece of paper that you used to have to fill out on the plane! At the heart of many of the problems for me is the accelerometer (i hope ive spelled that right) and the touchscreen. When the phone switches from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) there is at least a 2-3 second hang while the device tries to figure out what it wants to do....this is compounded when for example you take it from your pocket and it revolves several times on its way up! Then you have to contenend with the clunky touch interface to get to your contacts and make that call. Now it has to be said that the predective text and search functions are quite outstanding almost clairvoyant at times. Particularly as you fumble to get to the word you want striking every letter on the way, it somehow still gets to the right end point! That being said the combination of the accelerometer issue and the interface means making a call can take 5-10 seconds which is far too long by anyone's reckoning.

As for email yes its nice but again the constant and slow swapping from landscape to portrait is very frustrating as (again) is the clunky nature of the interface.....and texting too is a pain. And when you have a few pints on board the device is like some form of water torture as you try to text/call in a less then 100% sober state.

Yes the display is gorgeous, the media player, music and sound quality are all excellent but everytime you dive in the try and get the most out of it there pops up that bloody acclerometer and interface and frustrate the hell out of you.

The Storm is my first Blackberry device. Prior to this I was using the Nokia E51. I would imagine that any existing Blackberry customers would be frustrated by the Storm as the above issues force you to slow down what you are doing in order to avoid all the flock-ology.

The Storm in my opionion has traded some of the substance of other RIM devices (this opinion just based on my observations of other devies and users) for style! If you use a Blackberry now and emailing smartly on the move is of primary concern to you I would not pick up the Storm as it will only dissappoint. The devices excellent features (media in particular) will be of little comfort to you when your spending 10 minutes writing a 2 line mail!!

I hope that helps some of you out there :)

Re: Two Weeks and Nothing?

I have to agree it does all seem rather stale out there at the moment..... :(

One thing that never fails to astound me is how during these harder times large companies get into cost cutting mode which in real terms kills most innovation!! It would be nice if someone thought outside the box and didnt follow the "business for idiots" manual and rather than cut cost, either keep or increase spend in new products and services otherwise I think we are doomed to spend the next few years getting re-hash after re-hash of services and products...

How glum :(

Re: Just how bad is the Blackberry Storm?

I got mine last week having been using a Nokia E51 with VF business email for the past few months. (I believe in one handset at a time please). The E51 kept me in touch as I needed to be was a lovely size and weight so all round did the job nicely......

The Storm has taken me some time to acclimatise to......it's my first Blackberry device and overall the usability and learning curve for the UI was simple enough....there are a few areas though that I did struggle with initially and do still find myself cursing each day....not enough to put me off but just enough for it not to be as user friendly as the E51.

My big bugbear is the way the screen constantly is swapping from portrait to landscape.......this is highly annoying as when I put my phone down flat on a counter it goes landscape, I then pick it up to make a call and have to wait a full 4-5 seconds for it to go portrait so that I can make a call.........

Related to this when answering a call the screen refreshes very slowly so I often find myself saying hello to various parts of the phone trying to figure out whether the call is actually connected or not :(

I have to agree with the above review that inputting text is a bit more labour intensive that I would like and were it my primary device for sending mail....I think I might eventually lose the plot too!!

I have only toyed around with the camere and media pieces and it does have to be said they are very good, the facebook app is nice and simple (and getting a lot of use!).

In short I would imagine that if you are a business user OR an enterprise looking to invest in a touchscreen device that does all the business things right, I don't think that you can go too wrong with this phone :)

Re: StormWatch: Unboxing the BlackBerry Storm

Excuse the ignorance but as this will be my first Blackberry device , once I get it up and running where is the best place for me to go get apps etc. to put onto it??

Re: StormWatch: Unboxing the BlackBerry Storm

I hope to get mine today :)

Re: Virgin Mobile: More abuse of the word ‘unlimited’

What a load of complete and utter twoddle!!

So basically you can print/broadcast whatever headline you like so long as the small print retracts the statement...?!?!?!

Imagine the chaos if this type of logic was applied to other industries?

"Go-away-Baldness

Hair Re-Growth Formula***

***Will not reduce the rate of your baldness"

What is the point in that??

Re: Virgin Mobile: More abuse of the word ‘unlimited’

In Ireland with Voda you get 50MB per day for 99c, Since November last year (I think).

So that equates to 86p in the UK at today's rates. As you stated we have lots of great info but the real isse arises around how you can release that issue without breaching data protection issues, particularly when you bring an external 3rd party in to do the targeting.

Also there is the cocnern among some operators, that a Normob may get the hump if they thought they were being "targeted". The term alone doesn't conjure up images of someone gently and politely doing you a favour by showing you the most relevant ad to you but rather of the Normob neing hunted down..........maybe we should start talking about these things in a more Normob friendly way??

Re: T-Mobile UK readying Android

Me too :)

Re: We’re taking Unlimited Drinks to Prague

Hmmm.......

I can see where this is going......

First London, then Dublin, now Prague.........

Amsterdam, Las Vegas for the next one ;)

Re: Ask Mr Operator: “When will WiMax become standard for carriers?”

Superb Article Mr. Operater :)

This kinda stuff should be on the National Curriculum !!

Back in 1998 (As a young 20year old) I was working in a Bluetooth startup. I had previously worked in Motorola and had managed to get onto the Bluetooth SIG Marketing Evengelism team. What I witnessed back then was Intel's unbendable belief to get "their" standard out the door and their ability and willingness to throw money at it to ensure nobody else got into the race.

All Intel are itnerested in is selling their chips and if they've pegged their colours to WiMax you can be sure they will throw money hand over fist at it to make sure that they sell those chips!

Maybe they should just cut their losses and open a Fish'N Chip Shop :)

Re: Won’t somebody please get me a Nokia E51?

I have to agree...the E51 is a great phone! Especially if like Ewan all you are looking for a is a slim, light easy to haul about phone with a good exchange support.
