Hey there Chris, always nice to see you around these parts. :)

I was reading about that GigaOM test, and it did look interesting. I'm just curious whether that would "add" to the commentary, or just have another way of having extra backlinks or reactions at the end of the post?

I looked at JS-kit's Echo comments system, and while it has potential, it currently offers a lot of noise. Posts that look like they have 300 comments, to find that there are about 20 genuine discussions coupled with 270 RT's... gah!

Blogging is evolving so much, with platforms like Posterous and Tumblr making it easier than ever before, it'd be great to see something that can involve all your converations, in real-time.

I think Friendfeed could have offered an idea on how to achieve that (particularly with BackType of Disqus integration) - but now that they're part of Facebook... who knows where that'll go.

I think the secret to successfully integrating tweets into the comments section of blogs is doing just that — finding the tweets that actually have substance. Using BackType (or BackTweets) you quickly see that most (re)tweets for blog posts just contain a post title and shortened URL. GigaOM recently did something interesting where they only display tweets containing a special hashtag that's assigned to each post. It's a nice way to separate the links and RTs from actual commentary.

Thanks for the feedback, Corvida. We're definitely working to improve the scale of properties and platforms we support (including Echo). We currently support hundreds of thousands of properties, including Digg, Reddit, FriendFeed, and more.

We'll be making some updates to BackType Search that will help surface better conversation on any given topic, rather than every single mention (which is what we do now)

Hi Jeff,

Unfortunately, BackType Connect won't work properly with Disqus installed — it's designed to work on top of the native Wordpress comment system. We're looking into working with third party comment systems like Disqus now.

Agreed that improving the conversations is key!

The more blog that can implement collaborative, 3rd party commenting tools, the better - whether it be native wordpress comments + backtype connect or disqus comments + disqus social reactions, etc.

Hmm, I wonder about duplicates though if I imported WP comments into Disqus.

Actually, I embrace fragmentation, but I also crave aggregation. You guys and Disqus (when their feature gets released) have it right. Allow the blogger to aggregate commentary that happens other places.

Love to hear that you're making use of our plugin, despite not being able to display comments in Disqus. I think you can actually get Disqus to show our comments by importing or sync-ing with WP comments, but unfortunately it doesn't do that automatically.

Generally, I don't think you, as a publisher, can stop comments from fragmenting to other services. At BackType, we're hoping to give both bloggers and comment authors the tools to find, follow and share conversations irrespective of where they take place.

Our BackType Connect plugin is intended to serve the people that aren't using Disqus - we aren't a competing comment system, we enhance the native Wordpress comment system. So we don't really compete with Disqus; in fact, we're constantly looking for ways to work with them. Anything that improves the conversation on blogs is great for all of us!

Moderation is done at the account level i.e. a comment wouldn't hit RSS, FriendFeed, Twitter etc unless you approved it first.

My biggest problem with Backtype is that it's had a hard time finding
comments that are actually from me. Some of what it found for me wasn't
actually by me - and other stuff that was clearly from me wasn't included in
the results.
Don't get my negative review wrong - I've been very keenly watching your
service because I think it's a pretty cool idea. Each time I've come to it,
though, (which has been once every other month or so), the results for me
have been just slightly on the wrong side of world-ready for me to want to
incorporate it in my website in a permanent way.

We're planning on supporting threading and more options to group and organize the comments we connect to your blog in the next release. What problems have you experienced with "matching" on BackType?

Regarding reach: we're working hard to improve the number of properties we support; currently, we support hundreds of thousands of properties and index over a million comments every day. We're definitely going to continue improving that. In fact, over the next year we're going to be addressing all the problems you brought up.

What specific applications are you interested in -- as a blogger, comment author, or both?

The main uses for BackType are 1) claiming and sharing comments and 2) monitoring keywords (alerts), comment threads (subscriptions) and content (connect and backtweets.com), none of which really require a lot of context.

Thanks for your comment. We have a feature called BackType Subscriptions that does what you're looking for, but it will only alert you on comments that were directly in response to the post you're interested in (whereas Connect shows multiple conversations happening on Twitter, Digg, Reddit, other blogs, etc)

There's probably a business model for investors to focus on platforms or skins, but they are different business models (financial and operational). I'm not really in a position to tell investors what they "should" focus on :)

Creating "skins of data" is more entrepreneur friendly than investor friendly. Micro-M&A deals are just glorified hiring bonuses. It follows that investors, in my opinion, should focus on platforms (markets) as they both create and capture the most value. Nevertheless, developing "skins" to help us understand the overwhelming amount of data available on the open web is still a noble cause. I just think it becomes much more meaningful at a larger scale than the word "skin" suggests.
