I remember when I was about 16 kyu playing an even teaching game with a 2 kyu. At the end of the opening he was shaking his head in disbelief and saying, "There's no hope." I assured him that he would catch up in the middle game. He did.

Re: Monday Go Meditation: Game 67

I am thinking of doing a blog post soon promoting the app Smart Go Kifu. I found that since I was viewing the blog on my iPad I was given a choice of the app to use to view the file when I tapped on the link to download. Smart Go Kifu was one of the choices. After I got the file into the app I viewed it in the book view. It was really nice to review that way especially because you comment on every move in the game. I did a screen capture of one of the pages and sent it to you via email.

Re: Monday Go Meditation: Game 65

I'm impressed with your analysis of your own game.

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Conclusion

Anyone can look up the pairings if they want. I explain that I am taking pictures of all of my opponents in the US Open. I don't say I will post the pictures on my blog, but maybe I will say that next year, or I'll just do it. I think people like that kind of thing.

I forgot to take a picture of the Round 3 opponent, and never did track her down to get one later. I didn't take one of my 5th Round opponent until after the game was over. I had won it, and we went to report the results and then I asked him if he would return to the board for a photograph, which he did. He was really nice so I felt as if I could ask him. I said, "Pretend the game hasn't happened yet". Or something like that. I had a perverse impulse to say, "Pretend you still have a chance to win." because he was a really nice guy, and was taking the loss well, but that would have been way over the top, so I held my tongue.

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Conclusion

Well, I was worried that my post about the Congress was too late, and so I didn't post much detail. I tried to take a picture of every one of my opponents in the US Open and I think I may have gotten all but one of them.

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Conclusion

I agree that this was a great series of posts about the congress. It has inspired me to document my own congress more fully next year, and to share it in greater detail. It has also prompted me to think back and remember my own first congress in 1997 in Lancaster. Maybe that will be another blog post coming up.

I would also like to mention that it was fine to read this more than a month after the congress was over. It didn't need to be hot off the presses to be interesting.

Re: Weekly Progress Report: #03

I am so glad you asked about the problem review. Ordinarily one would be taking problems from a book or some other source. That would allow one to measure his review in terms of number of problems or amount of time spent, so your question is a natural one to ask.

With the Training System over at Guo Juan's internet Go School, however, things are different. The Training System takes care of the details for you. You can accept the default parameters for how many new problems to be shown each day, or you can set your own parameters. Then once you have started to use the system it will present you with review problems based on how you rated them previously, new problems based on how many you want to see each day, and your review will come to and end when you have been presented with a certain number of review and new problems based on your parameters, or a total number of problems, which is also in the parameters. I often click a new problem as being "hard" which will force the system to present it to me again within ten minutes. I think that each of those individual presentations will count as a problem for the purpose of bringing the review session to an end.

So basically, you hit the button to start reviewing. Then you do the problems in the order in which they are presented. You rate their difficulty so they will show up again on a schedule that is suited to your particular review needs. You keep going until the system gives you a message saying you are done for the day. At that point you can stop for the day or you can override the system and ask it to give you 15 more questions. You are also reminded that you can set new parameters if you desire.

It takes all of the guess work out of reviewing and it prevents you from seeing problems that are too easy too often. I have problems that are set to show up in 43 days based on my ratings of their difficulty.

I would love for you to at least try the two free lectures with problem sets so you can experience this. Read about the details over at the Internet Go School.

I did time myself once, and my problem review takes me approximately 20 minutes each day. That is a reasonable amount of time for anyone to devote to problem study.

Re: Weekly Progress Report: #03

I am working on crafting my own Training Regimen. So far I have two things in place.

1. Two hour lessons with Yilun Yang on alternate Thursdays
2. Daily problem review using the Training System at Guo Juan's Internet Go School.

The next thing that I want to add to my training regimen is going to be rated 19 x 19 games on KGS. I am thinking that I want to have a game per day, but I think I might phrase that as seven games per week, which would allow me to meet my requirements early in the week. or to play catch up at the end of the week.

I want to start those rated games soon.

I think this comment is going to get fleshed out and become a blog post :-)

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Day 7

The Congress in San Francisco was at a college campus with a meal plan. I am not sure if the meal plan was required or not that year. Sometimes the venue does not allow people to pass up the meal plan. I think that was the case in Tacoma. The food in the cafeteria on the SF meal plan was horrendous. I believe that they said that the meal plan will not be mandatory in Minneapolis when they were doing the presentation to the chapters at the General Assembly at the Congress this year. However, there may not be a lot of options for dining off campus. One way to meet new people has always been to fill out a table in the cafeteria. That wasn't an option this year, so I had my fears of being a mealtime wallflower. It wasn't as bad as I had expected. but I did have a fair number of meals alone.

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Day 7

I heard a lot of complaints about the food at the banquet. The worst congress food ever over all was in San Francisco. I think the year was 1999.

Not everyone plays in the main event at the Congress, though most people do. A woman at the congress told me one year that she never plays in the Open, but stays up late and plays a great deal of self paired games.

Forgetting about why you decided to spend the Congress as you did, it might actually be good for you since your main objective was to interact with the professional players. So don't automatically assume that you must play in the Open next year.

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Day 7

The Congress was one of the best I ever attended, but the banquet was probably the worst ever in terms of the food. But you are right, it's about having the space for the ceremony. Plus was wine, which is not always the case, so it wasn't all bad.

Thanks for mentioning my award. I was totally taken by surprise when my name was called, as I thought I had missed my chance when I had not been included in the third place winners.

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Day 6

You did much better with finding good food than I did. I pretty much zeroed in on a couple of places. I should have been more adventurous. We won't have these options next year in Minneapolis. I'll look forward to your photographs of college campus cafeteria food in your Congress recap posts. :-) Maybe we will be lucky and have a congress in NYC again soon.

Re: 7 Sure-Fire Ways to Reduce Stress and Restore Your Sanity

My best stress reducer falls under the category of art, but is a little more specific than that. I have taken up a quilting technique called English Paper Piecing. It is all done by hand. The quiet repetitive stitching is a form of meditation that I crave. I spend at least an hour per day immersed in my world of fibers. You can find me over at Platform University where I am enjoying the company of like minded people and learning how to bring my love of fiber arts to others through my own web site at http://hexylady.com

Re: Go Congress 2014 – Day 5

I would actually prefer to have dice that are rollable and not made into keychains. In one instance my opponent was well into Byo Yomi and I still had ten minutes on my clock. Why am I proud of that?

I was actually quite pleased with the time limits in the Die Hard. On the few occasions when I had participated in that tournament I found that there was little time for me between games. This time there was adequate time between games to rest a bit before the next round even if my opponent was using all of his available time. I had a fair amount of time left on my clock in all four of my games if I recall correctly.

I knew exactly what the halo was. At first I was going to comment on the excellent compositional skills of the photographer because it was used to very good effect. These are things that often go unnoticed when a picture is composed. I taught high school photography in a former life.

Now if you wanted to photoshop it you could easily extract the halo from the light fixture resize it and position it directly above your head. That I would like to see.
