I mean you are usually supportive and "positive", whereas this time looks like you have bitten something that made you angry :)

I just wanted to say I hate as well when somebody tells me how do to something. I can buy a screwdriver and use it exclusively to open boxes or envelopes. And I don't think its designer will come to me to tell me it is made for screws.

But I am both a user of tools and a designer of tools. And when you design you feel you
got "what people want". When you release it and see people use it in an unexpected way, believe me, you feel the need to say "I made it for this and not for that!".

Probably forcing people is not the right way of facing such a situation, but since users have the right to review your product, designers should have the right to say - at least - what was the intended use of their product.

Re: Posty

Tumblr fail :(

I'll update the post. Twitter has the growth and the buzz."

So true! Let's skip the paradox in it (why there is better people choose that?).
I think such choice of limiting the number of requests negatively impacts
the momentum and the buzz.
Twitter didn't get famous because of third party applications, but _also_ thanks to those.
Developers can move towards other services/platforms (identi.ca?) maybe with multimedia
support like rejaw. In any case some service which guarantees certain conditions, like opensourceness or less restrictive limits to api access.

My 2$

Re: Private: Twitter Apps Can Only Grow so Far

Out of curiosity, how do you split requests and "process them concurrently"?
Is there a way to make a cumulative requests to get the list of followers?
Don't you have to make one request for each page of followers?

Anyway I think that relationship data (e.g. who follows who) are crucial for the next generation of
microblogging applications. I am in a serious (= work) relationship with many people, both on facebook and other networks. But when I need to talk to them about serious stuff I contact them via linkedin, news groups, email, but not facebook (though I have them in my fb contacts).
At the beginning I hoped the was some serendipity in facebook. But new job opportunities
(or relationships with like-minded people) came and developed through other networks.

Re: louisgray.com: RSS Overload: Don't Complain, Do Something About It

"An application that was built to discover and distribute information is a blessing, not our enemy. It’s impossible. All you end up doing is designing something that makes everyone unhappy.” - Leisa Reichelt

I subscribe each single character of this quotation. There will always be somebody "blaming" your product, or saying "if you add this I will buy/use it".
I think the only solution is patience, smart interpretation of users' feedback and passion. I guess you and your team have all these features, so there are all the requisites to create a great product.

Good luck!

Re: louisgray.com: Walls, Blogs, and Power: Building Fortress Twitter

Definitely Twitter can be improved, just like every other web product! ;-)

But that's not to say that Twitter doesn't "work" without add-on services. I mostly use Twitter through the straight-up web interface alone, and have noted that people like Robert Scoble does the same. That's not to say that the universe of add-ons and the innovation coming out of that sphere aren't rad, as they certainly are!

Re: louisgray.com: Walls, Blogs, and Power: Building Fortress Twitter

Thanks to Michael Arrington! I feel I have chosen the right way with my desktop application.
As for fixing, I still think Twitter needs some tuning. A good interface depends on a good backend. Twitter's backend is pretty good, apart from the recent security issues that we all know. So I guess that'd be the next step.

Re: Why Twitter *can't* be conversational for me (Scripting News)

I don't think Twitter was born to be a tool for conversation. At least not the conversation we are used to have in forums (full of long signatures, with pedant people, full of thanks and emoticons, etc.). Twitter is for quick info exchange, more or less like sms. New links, "how are you?"s, "what do you think of?"s, etc.

If your message does not fit 140 chars either you are prolix or you are not for twitter.
In any case you can write a blog post as a response and throw the link on the twitter "bus".
Somebody will notice it. :)

My 2$

Re: louisgray.com: RSS Has Practically Eliminated My Need for Browser Bookmarks

Right! Another technique to get mainstream is to positively "shock" a group or a category (like college kids) and let them spread the word.

Re: louisgray.com: Will Twitter Go Mainstream? There's no clear method to the madness.
While I may use it primarily to poll an audience, or send blog
updates, others will tell you their latest meal, or curse for who
knows what reason. The resulting cacophony can be enough to scare
people away. Among the mainstream, I've seen people overwhelmed by
Facebook. Twitter could be that much more noise.

Re: louisgray.com: Posty Author's Guide to Unfollow Uninteresting Twitterers

I see we share the same difficulties, remember who we added, when, keep track of replies etc. I suspect that if the list of services proliferates too much we'd need a "ghost" who updates stuff for us.
Or we need the support tool/manager that I am thinking of :)

Re: louisgray.com: Will Twitter Go Mainstream? People don't get the _sense_ of twitter.
They probably get more the sense of something like Facebook, which "allows me to reconnect with people I knew time ago".

I think this is the main con of twitter. People are not yet able to find a reply to the question: "What for?" When such a reply will be clear, Twitter will go mainstream.

My 2cents.

Re: Twhirl driving me a bit nuts

Hi,

thanks for mentioning Posty in you blog!
For any feedback you can contact the team via twitter.com/_posty
