Especially:

> Jekyll runs on Ruby, instead of Javascript — my preferred language
> (if you ever need to customize something; but Ruby is not PHP so it's
> not all that bad)

I've been working on a JS-based Jekyll clone, Enfield: https://github.com/fortes/e... -- so you can stick with JS and customize things.

Re: Rocky Jaiswal

> By sudo-ing npm install you're giving root access to anything uploaded to the npm registry

This is false. See the official node.js README: https://github.com/isaacs/n...

> As of version 0.3, it is recommended to run npm as root. This allows npm to change the user identifier to the nobody user prior to running any package build or test commands.

Re: Friday Night Lights

Clear eyes, full hearts!

Re: iPhone or Android? Key Tips for Publishers Considering Apps

> Native apps use code written specifically for a device and operating system,
> and are able to take advantage of built-in features like multi-touch screens and GPS

Although you're absolutely correct that Native apps have access to functionality not available in the browser (such as the camera) -- you've chosen two examples that are actually available in the browser: Multi-touch and Geolocation. Modern mobile (and desktop) browsers also support offline access, which, as Steve mentions, are the key features needed for most rich content experiences.

Ultimately, publishers need to look at the costs of development and the size of their market and make decisions as to which platforms are worth investing in. One of the big advantages of developing for the web (aside from greater compatibility) is that most media companies already have a staff of web designers and developers, and therefore don't need to hire expensive outside consultants.

Full disclosure: My company, Treesaver, is working on technology that enables companies to create rich, browser-based content sites/apps. You can see a live example here: http://demo.nomadeditions.c... (note that you can swipe on iphone/android/ipad)

Re: Why we shut NewsTilt down

Great write up, my condolences that it didn't work out.

I'm amazed you went and found another job so quickly, congratulations!

What's Nathan going to do next?
