The sad, perhaps profoundly so, part is that it seems no one wants to do so. To some degree, Michael Moore's 'documentation' of the fall of the american dream follows such an arc itself.

Re: Films of the Year So Far, Part 3: Gran Torino

haikus -- too simple
why cant people just speak in
normal meter please?

Re: ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ and ‘Anvil! I'm not sure its quite as bad as Jett's post may imply. 'Transactionality' of everyday life and financial mobility and constraint are certainly at the center of the film. Having said that, I wouldn't say everything is for sale. To a large degree, beliefs and principles guide the two leads throughout the movie.

I'm told Soderberg cited Antonioni as an inspiration for the film, and to a point I can see that, at least within the message. TGE is probably a decent dramatisation of how the financial crisis twisted the priorities and lives of people through 2008. Cue Modernism, Ennui, etc. The film, however, lacks the visual depth of Antonioni. It seems like a decent first draft of a more complete film, as if SS made this one to pitch a full film to the studios. I think I'd like to see that movie much more.

Re: It’s A.I.

I see you've turned the idea of "the Fountain' commentary on its head. At that point, I understood the humor but much of it was notably unfunny to me. And while much of the social commentary that the film addressed was interesting, it never really fleshed it out, just sort of poked at. Since then, I haven't been able to generate interest for another venture into Kevin Smith's world, despite it being a 20 minute drive from my home.

ps. Gareth, welcome to America. The puritan-porn paradox is just the first in a number of paradoxes/public lies in our society.

Re: TFT 37 Preview: Pineapple Express / Tropic Thunder / Righteous Kill

ah, i suppose that makes a bit more sense. the way i remember it in the show, gareth 'proposed' the title change and you had already taken the liberty of finding the domain. its been a while since ive heard it though, and i suppose my brain could have mangled my memory as it would wish.

Re: TFT 37 Preview: Pineapple Express / Tropic Thunder / Righteous Kill

sounds like a great show!

and if i remember correctly, it was PDGH who proposed "film talk" be renamed _the_ film talk, so I'm inclined to trust his taste in definite articles over seth rogen.

Re: The Film Talk - Part 31 - The Mummy Vs. Havent yet seen it myself though -- Ill follow up once I do see it and figure out how our opinions mesh.

Just a thought, you guys may want to consider pre(re)viewing movies with a bit more in advance of their release to get them on posters. I'd suggest Death Race for the show, though that would be only two weeks in advance. I also think the probability of the boilerplate review being an actual review of the film to be rather high.

Re: The Film Talk - Part 28 - Journey to the Center of Hellboy!

PDGH,

While I agree that Jett is unquestionably a podcasting virtuoso, I think it might be a bit preemptive to apply the title Maestro. Im not sure that greatness has to be equated with a title or nickname (cf. MacGuyver, Mr. T). All I'm saying is that we may be moving a bit fast; perhaps we should slow things down, wed best not force a nickname or title before its time.
