They monitor patient weight carefully using bluetooth-enabled scales and require patients to weigh themselves several times per day. Obviously, it can be defeated by just weighing a sack of potatoes, but most patients want to live, so that's not likely. Anyway, doctors and caregivers can monitor patient weight and address any sudden unexpected changes.

One other interesting thing about this environment is that it is built entirely on Windows servers running on VMWare ESX Server.

Thanks, Jake, for the mention of Piocon and Your Choice Living. But that's not why I do it.

I am questioned often (by employers past and present as well as friends--not that those are different groups :) ) about why I give away knowledge that took sweat and time to gain. The answer is that I believe that if I give it away, it'll come back to me several fold. It's an old addage applied to a new world, I guess, but I think it works.

I always learn more when I'm teaching a class about something I know than I do when attending a class about something I don't know. Think about that for a minute. Then again, maybe I'm just not a good student :).

Re: Spring Conferences

I'll definitely be looking for you at Collaborate. Personally, I haven't ever owned a Mac (though I did have a kick-ass Apple IIgs with 1Mb RAM back in the day), but if I'm gonna be locked in, I'd rather lock in to Jobsworld than Gatesland. Having worked with Windows a lot, I sure don't think Jobsworld could have anything quite so frustrating. And, even if it is a little frustrating, at least I'd be cooler than I am now (no where to go but up really) for having an Apple.

Re: Suggest a Session is a Hit

I think you should write letters to each and every user and mail them via USPS. I mean, obviously USPS has got to be hurting for cash, so why not help the postal workers? :)

Seriously, I don't see why you couldn't offer some product categories. Maybe a session is allowed to be part of multiple categories (just like I have multiple products listed in my profile). You'd also need some new categories that aren't product-based, like Social Networking and other less-concrete ideas. I'd like to be able (right now) to filter by at least a product area (DB, Middleware, Apps, IdM) to be able to page through things that I find most interesting.

Oh, and stop paying people to vote for your session, it isn't fair. ;)

P.S. I think it's on par with the other OCP exams I've taken, but certainly not a replacement for the hands-on experience of the OCM exam.

I've been impressed with some of the course reviews I've read and heard from those attending OU in the last year or so. I more or less "blacklisted" OU classes many years ago, but maybe I should reconsider based on comments from several respectable DBAs lately.

Scott Gossett wrote a lot of the 9i OCM exam and I certainly respect it. I went in assuming that it would be like the other certification programs Oracle had assembled at that time and came out a believer that things were about to change. I share your thoughts that there are some great individuals leading the charge inside Oracle for better, more meaningful certifications. Considering that it is a relatively young program (I don't consider anything before the 8i OCP really meaningful), I think they're doing a fantastic job.

Re: OpenWorld 07 QuickConnect

Hi Eddie--I'll look forward to meting up. The converter will take a physical system and convert it to a VM (but you have to use the enterprise version to convert to an ESX server destination).

I've used the converter free tool and it works quite well, but that's not what this post was about.

Re: Cloning a VM on ESX Server 3.0.1

I see now--I think you're talking about the licensed version of the converter tool (I've never used the licensed version). With the free version of the converter tool (they call it the "starter edition"), you can't do anything related to ESX, so I guess that's where the post here would come in handy.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Reference: http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/get.html

Re: Oracle HTTP Server (Apache) rotatelogs configuration

I haven't done a vanilla Apache install for quite a long time--the last time I did an Apache installation, rotatelogs wasn't used in the default configuration. Seems fair--both groups have to pay $0.25 per drink and the company just continues to cover the coffee costs. I heard that the purchase price was $1.02 per share. So, you'd have to see what your option strike price was to compute the possible payout. If your strike price was $1.00 and you had 10,000 shares, then you'd stand to cash in $200. In this case, they had several different queries that needed to run, but they wouldn't know which queries to run until runtime. So, it was relatively easy for them to just run a query and PIPE the rows out at runtime. For my test, I just added those rows to a collection and then returned the whole collection at the end.

Either way, I found this interesting and I'm grateful that you stopped by to comment!

Re: PIPELINED PL/SQL function performance

Hi Bradd,

I was a bit surprised by the numbers as well and that's why I decided to come out of blog-hiding and write it up. He mentioned that PIPELINED functions will almost always have a longer overall runtime as compared to non-PIPELINED table functions.

To @Michael OShea's question, yes, a table function is any function that returns a collection.

The benefits of a PIPELINED table function are that the client processing of rows from the function can be overlapped with the function's runtime, so the application can start doing something useful instead of waiting for the function to complete. I believe that the true "power" of PIPELINED functions are that they can be used in conjunction with parallelization which can be a real performance boost--however, I don't say that confidently as I haven't worked with them enough to know all those details. I requested that Steven follow up here when he has time, so hopefully we'll get some more expert input soon.

Re: Collaborate 08, RAC SIG & other sessions of interest

I wasn't able to attend the Tuesday panel, but I heard it went very well (as usual). For a lot about new features, what's coming, and lots of fun (Collaborate is fun too), OpenWorld is a great place to get that sort of stuff. For performance-focused sessions, the Hotsos Symposium is the place to be. If you can manage to convince your management, the UKOUG conference is a well-rounded, deeply technical event focused on Oracle technology. Occasionally, flights from Chicago to London are about the same cost as Chicago to San Francisco. Unfortunately, with the USD not doing so well, it isn't the best time to visit the UK.

Re: Updated WP and new theme

@Brian Is that a nice way of saying that you don't like it? :)

Re: Portal Virtual Host Configuration

@morz What problem? There was a time when I was working at a government agency that was attempting to create a "need-to-know engine". The questions it hoped to answer were things about identity and also authorization levels. So, it's functionality is a little beyond the authentication and attribute information, but similar idea. I guess they were ahead of their time (this was back in 1999).
As for a name, the "Identity Hub" makes sense. In the Oracle context, the Customer Hub is already a known term and at least somewhat understood, so that would help from a marketing and customer understandability standpoint.
