Once again it seems that so much of who we are as adults remains a reaction to what we experienced in high school. I don't think its possible to overestimate the (often traumatic) effects of our high school years.

I too went to a very small high school - about 70 in my class - and 20 years later am just now beginning to reconnect with some of the ppl who were my extended family from 6th thru 12th grade... and yet I find the pain of some events from high school remains as strong as ever... it keeps surprising me, and it keeps appearing.

I wonder what it would take to make it all go away...

Re: New Post for Troy!

Hi Troy,

What an honor to have the opportunity to write to you. I am not a marketer, nor do I blog regularly so I come to this topic to some degree as a consumer. For me the off-line communication is key to who I follow and respond to. I sometimes feel like a lot of us can get caught up in the social media frenzy of commenting and blogging primarily as a way of being seen, rather than because we have something truly unique to bring to the conversation. My offline contact with the fantastic ppl I meet virtually often helps bring their whole selves into focus for me. I think that in the long run it is the users' authenticity that separates the web from other forms of media and I think it is that authenticity, 3000 comments later or 10 comments later, that will ultimately inform our sphere of influence.

Re: History of TV relived Online - Jeff Pulver Launching Pulver.TV

I think this is a fantastic step in the right direction and who else to take it but Jeff Pulver (with the amazing tri-caster andy at his side). I think we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg as far as live content is concerned and I'm sure some of the ways it proliferates will surprise us all. What I am surprised at however is how few fellow artists have taken to the medium, the opportunity for actors, improv troops, even visual artists are endless....hmmm this is giving me a few more ideas!

Re: Shel, Feldman - In The Internet, Low Budget Doesn’t Mean Bad Production

kfir... you are right about vid production...its not easy but its doable...step 1..get advice, aid and instruction from a video expert- move on from there.. I am constantly amazed at the lack of effort that goes into online video production, I mean, I wouldn't slap together some code and advertise my web site... a trend I often see is a a slick sophisticated intro and extro with extremely amateur production values in between- in the um... CONTENT part...

however... the Shel debacle brings up a far more important issue for me that has nothing to do with video production or quality. The new media's high school like, personality centric popularity contests have done little to set us apart from the main stream media we say we wish to better. If the new media community continues to celebrate, link to, blog about, and twitter about people who use bullying, intimidation and hate to get attention we continue to pave a future for ourselves that far more closely resembles the fox news sensationalism of the past then the brave new world of media democratization and integrity so many of us have envisioned.

Re: Shel, Feldman - In The Internet, Low Budget Doesn’t Mean Bad Production

One word kfir... Are they experiencing their formative years differenlty than I did in the 80"s? or is the answer as simple as the simpleness of procuring a weapon of mass destruction?

Re: Era of Conversation – New Media Marketing Day Recap

the folks at DMAW obviously couldn't miss the fact that cameraman, twitterer, new media speaker... chef I imagine...whatever the topic... you are a born inspirer!!! and I LOVE "return on involvement"... brilliant!

K

Re: Video on the Net – Media Workers and Media Moguls Making the “Digital” Transition

so looking forward to meeting you LIVE and IN PERSON!!!! I assume the lovely Julien is implying that the positive nature of your post is sure to alienate viewers... or is it simply that podshow is so uniformly hated that readers will be immediately turned off to any post that refutes the idea of the common enemy they love to hate? lord.. I hope its not the former... while I would never charecterize my web activities (blog and vodcast) as pure sweetness and light I am counting on the fact that there are ppl out there who do care about real human experiece, emotion and inspiration... much like Julien's brilliant "listen to your kids" cast does...

Re: Podcast Downloads Dominated by Men in iTunes?

I spent the past two days in the expo hall of streaming media east and was blown away (if not surprised) by the complete lack of women. While there were a smattering of women working various booths, I can count on one hand the number of women attendees I encountered, and that is being generous...it does make me wonder... women!!!! Where are you!!!! Media is evolving at lightning speed... it is in fact the wild wild west out there, absolutely anyone is poised to become a leader in this new media world.. the perfect time for women to establish themselves as innovators in this new market! The opportunities are limitless!!!

Re: I Have Given Birth (To a Book)

A million congrats! Online video will fully find its wings when we as online video producers fully embrace the particular advantages that the internet has to offer rather than imitate what we have always recognized as linear television shows. My company Synchronis.tv attempted to bring online entertainment to a new and specifically web 2.0 level when we produced "35", the first scripted web 2.0 drama to stream live to the internet (3 cameras mixed in real time and streamed live at 9pm from September 17th -30th 2007 on ustream.tv). While our live web drama incorporated a chat room , and of course took advantage of the newly accessible live streaming platforms, it is our hope to more fully integrate our audience into the live creative process in our next go round.

An equally important distinction is that many web entertainment companies (mine included) are fully committed to a profit share plan in which all our cast and crew are compensated proportionately, in perpetuity, and regardless of the medium by which that profit was derived. The democratization of entertainment via online media means just that...all creators are an integral and irreplaceable part of the whole.

I believe the opportunities for online video producers are boundless and the creative possibilities for writers, directors and actors unlimited as soon as we, as committed online producers, manage to harness the particular power of the web.

best,
Kathryn Jones
http://www.synchronis.tv
