in Video, Media Mix, and Emotions on Pravda on Media and Technology
And yesterday you said you didn't care about all that "ART stuff"!!! It is in fact, the "artistic" side- the ability to hook into a viewer's humanity and to reflect their lives- that gives a video value- which in turn can be turned into advertising dollars, but without art, what have you got?

in Kathryn Jones is at it again, and How Not to Do Internet Video on Pravda on Media and Technology
LOVE the video bill!!!! basic...IMPORTANT info that everyone can follow... BUT!!! one little disagreement... internet video is the place to experiment... there is no reason to make our vids look like TV... TV belongs on TV, internet video belongs on the internet... this is the place to experiment... make mistakes... look like a fool...it is those experiments and mistakes that will lead us to the holy grail of freshness, originality and ultimately to a new, unique voice for video on the net!

in New Post for Troy! on PurpleCar
Hi Troy,
What an honor to have the opportunity to write to you. Please know that all of us over here in the U.S.- (or at least all of us new media folk) are so proud of all of you, are so grateful to all of you, and want nothing more than for your safe and healthy return to your families, regardless or our personal political persuasions.
Stay safe and strong and know that millions of prayers are with you, literally every minute of every day.
All my very best,
Kathryn Jones

in Shel, Feldman - In The Internet, Low Budget Doesn’t Mean Bad Production on Pravda on Media and Technology
One word kfir... INTEGRITY... without that, content is just as cammack implies, a monetizable commodity, like a barbie doll or an eggplant... web 2.0 is by definition social... without the community it is simply tv on the web, and bad tv at that.. I aspire to far more..

in Shel, Feldman - In The Internet, Low Budget Doesn’t Mean Bad Production on Pravda on Media and Technology
kfir... you are right about vid production...its not easy but its doable...step 1..get advice, aid and instruction from a video expert- move on from there.. I am constantly amazed at the lack of effort that goes into online video production, I mean, I wouldn't slap together some code and advertise my web site... a trend I often see is a a slick sophisticated intro and extro with extremely amateur production values in between- in the um... CONTENT part...
however... the Shel debacle brings up a far more important issue for me that has nothing to do with video production or quality. The new media's high school like, personality centric popularity contests have done little to set us apart from the main stream media we say we wish to better. If the new media community continues to celebrate, link to, blog about, and twitter about people who use bullying, intimidation and hate to get attention we continue to pave a future for ourselves that far more closely resembles the fox news sensationalism of the past then the brave new world of media democratization and integrity so many of us have envisioned.

Are you reading my mind??? I LOVE this idea!!!! I fervently believe that we, as the first generation of new media passionistas have a responsibility to eschew the gossip loving, bully loving, negative loving old media monopoly and present the world with a more realistic, positive alternative...that courage, respect and integrity are to be admired, strived for and celebrated. The very accessibility and democratization of media in the past few years is a powerful metaphor for the world that can be....
thanks Gary!

in Letter from a Mean Girl to Her Classmates on PurpleCar
oh purplecar!!! Once again it seems that so much of who we are as adults remains a reaction to what we experienced in high school. I don't think its possible to overestimate the (often traumatic) effects of our high school years.
I too went to a very small high school - about 70 in my class - and 20 years later am just now beginning to reconnect with some of the ppl who were my extended family from 6th thru 12th grade... and yet I find the pain of some events from high school remains as strong as ever... it keeps surprising me, and it keeps appearing.
I wonder what it would take to make it all go away...

in How can videbloggers leverage live video platforms? on Pravda on Media and Technology
I think some amount of live is almost critical to a video show designed for the web...its online videos very interactivity that sets it apart from TV, and nothing has more potential for direct interactivity than live. I think we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg as far as live content is concerned and I'm sure some of the ways it proliferates will surprise us all. What I am surprised at however is how few fellow artists have taken to the medium, the opportunity for actors, improv troops, even visual artists are endless....hmmm this is giving me a few more ideas!

in History of TV relived Online - Jeff Pulver Launching Pulver.TV on Pravda on Media and Technology
I think this is a fantastic step in the right direction and who else to take it but Jeff Pulver (with the amazing tri-caster andy at his side). Blip.tv and others have also ventured into the "campfire" community and I am excited to see where it leads. Content will continue to get better and better if people like Jeff continue to establish vibrant communities around it and I think a year down the road the launching of Pulver tv could well be seen as another watershed event...

in Finding, Measuring and Becoming an Influential Blogger on Pravda on Media and Technology
What draws me to web 2.0, video on the net, and social media is authenticity. I am not a marketer, nor do I blog regularly so I come to this topic to some degree as a consumer. For me the off-line communication is key to who I follow and respond to. I sometimes feel like a lot of us can get caught up in the social media frenzy of commenting and blogging primarily as a way of being seen, rather than because we have something truly unique to bring to the conversation. My offline contact with the fantastic ppl I meet virtually often helps bring their whole selves into focus for me. I think that in the long run it is the users' authenticity that separates the web from other forms of media and I think it is that authenticity, 3000 comments later or 10 comments later, that will ultimately inform our sphere of influence.

fascinating! logging in as we speak... but wonder...what I love about facebook is that it is so much more intimate and specific than other social networking sites... if we turn facebook into our own personal marketing machines, do we dilute its value?

I still have a hard time grasping that when I was a child you called someone to actually speak with them... no answering machines, no voice mails, no call waiting... if the line was busy you kept trying until it was free...
but does technology bring us closer?
My husband is currently working in Vermont in an area with no cell phone reception... but the internet signal is great. The only way we can communicate is through video ichat... and it is simply fantastic... seeing Guiesseppe, all his facial expressions, his gorgeous smile, his beautiful face is truly the next best thing to being there.. the only thing I can't do is touch him. It is so much more intimate than a phone call. It makes being apart almost (almost!) a pleasure.

in Here is what is wrong with Podshow (and maybe how to fix it) on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
You totally hit the nail on the head chris with your comment about treating podcasters as a commodity... this is not only true about podshow, it is common across a number of different podcasting and video viewing platforms... the result is that numbers trump content quality everytime in the eyes and interests of these companies ...and yes..its working for now...almost everything is this brave new world is working on some level right now..but I fear we are setting ourselves up for a backlash...there will come a time when podcasting and on line video will no longer be the exciting, new, anything goes medium and when the health of the new media movement will depend on compelling quality content. A company with a real investment in podcasting and on line video... a company that is in it for the long term, that is genuinely passionate about new media would behoove itself to nurture the rockstars of tomorrow alongside the cars crashing into buildings of today.
