I agree. The crazy thing is this hasn't just started. Over the 2-3 years at least I've seen various save Darfur campaigns that have gained little to no momentum. It's sickening if you ask me. We (in the general sense) rally around tsunami victims and are charitable towards refugees but we turn a blind eye to something this atrocious? I would question what kind of world do we really live in that this isn't a priority. But I already know the color...I mean answer.

See, my thing is it's not rap's responsibility to provide "positive" reinforcement of the Black community. In my mind that's akin to expecting a Pimp to lead a campaign on stopping sex outside of marriage. It just doesn't go. Why are we so bent on having rappers speak up for the community? I know there will be those that say "it's because they have such influence over our children". To that I say, "why not create groups/organizations for our children ourselves"? Why are we waiting and EXPECTING others to raise our children in the way they should go? There needs to be a balance. Where are the groups, shows, events, etc that were all around us when I was younger? I've said this on another board: We need to revive shows like "Teen Summit" because we need positivity and valid cultural information sent to our children.

My point is being missed. It is not rap's responsibility to raise our children. That's the simple truth of it. WE have to step it up. We've left it up to others TOO long and this is what we're reaping in this season. This cycle needs to stop. Yes it takes a village to raise a child. That's the fundamental value of the Black Community. But that goes BOTH ways. WE have not stepped up our game. PERIOD. Putting all the blame on rap is getting us nowhere. Rap is not going anywhere (as much as many of us may not like it). So instead of casting the "blame stone" WE has the village members needs to step up...declare a mutiny...take our children back. PERIOD.

Sorry sis...I missed that direct question. But I'll answer it now...I've co-founded an organization geared towards helping Black Women (young and old) re-image themselves. That's getting the ball rolling on my end. I've often said if we can't have a positive image of ourselves FOR ourselves...how can we expect others to?

Dame...can't believe I actually agree with you on something. LOL (Inside Joke). Seriously though I think we put too much emphasis on the "Role of the Black Athlete". That's a huge weight to carry on your shoulders. It's like if someone in your family comes into a large sum of money, many now have their hands out and expect you to do this, do that just because you have money. That's not right. We have to realize that not every Black Pro Athlete is going to be about helping inner city youth or other underprivileged programs. The simple fact of the matter is they just may not be "connected to it" because not all professional Black athletes grew up underprivileged. It's a known fact that most people do not support certain programs, not because they don't agree with the program, but because they're not connected or don't feel a connection to said program. Also PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong but what "Community Driven" programs (besides the one mentioned) does MLB have? The NBA has NBA Cares. The NFL has their partnership with United Way. So that could possibly be part of the problem as well. MLB doesn't seem to have a foothold in the overall community atmosphere.

No it's not about believing that "it's not my problem" (personally, I don't happen to believe this. I just like to play Devil's Advocate). It's that we expect EVERYONE to be about the same things that we're about just because they are in a certain role. There's always going to be "one bad apple in the bunch" does that mean we hold the apple tree responsible? No it doesn't.

The tragedies of yesterday made me think that by growing up in the inner city of Connecticut where we ALWAYS had security and police officers at the entrances of each unlocked door (from elementary even up to college), I guess I take those things (posted security) for granted.

As I was going through my daily routine of posting on my favorite message boards I came across a post on one of them regarding a memorial page on MySpace. The page gives a link to Ryan's personal page. I saw that it showed yesterday as his last log in. For some reason this made it all the more profound. Imagine starting your day as normal yet not realizing that it would be the absolute last time you initiate your daily routine. To say I am deeply saddened by this would be an understatement. This is a great post. One of the reasons I moved to ATL (from CT) was so I could be around more Blacks in the professional field. Being around like minded individuals has a way of lighting a fire under you.

Excellent point about starting a particular organization when there isn't one in your area. I've yet to find an org for Black Massage Therapists. Hmmm....see that fire being lit?

This is certainly something that will make a change. Hmm...now my only problem is I'll have a hard time finding something in my "listen zone" that would get a minus for a plus. My "listen zone" is filled with artists like Little Brother (NCCU EAGLE PRIDE), Slum Village, Goapele, Algebra, The Roots, Beres Hammond, Richie Spice, Jaguar Wright, Joss Stone, etc.

A great book that I encourage everyone to read is Sensual Celibacy. I think we've looked at the term celibate as something negative for far too long. I'm happy to say I'm celibate but I realize that when others hear or say the term they think of it negatively and think something's "wrong with me". LOL We really need to use the time that we have in the beginning of relationships to really get to know the person without the hinderence of sex clouded goggles.

Let's just say I forwarded this post to my mother. My brother (BigRayvin of Truth&Opinion) is NOTORIOUS for throwing things out. If you're not careful before you know it YOU could be set outside on Trash Day. Something he definitely didn't pick up from our mother. LOL

My thoughts on clutter (and trust me...it took some time before I actually learned AND applied this)... Although there's nothing like rolling over and finding yourself doing the paper version of Scrooge McDuck's coin swim, once you "de-clutter" you'll see how much more at peace and relaxed you feel.

TERRIFIC POST KIMBERLY!! Another thing I'd add to this is the fact that I don't believe women truly understand the power they hold. That realization in itself is quite the confidence booster. Now though, I'm not saying that realizing this power we wield means that we can't submit at times.
