in Dave Barry: "the CNN hologram is the single stupidest thing I have ever seen on TV, and I am including Carrot Top in that statement" on The One Blog
The explanation that Wolf Blitzer gave for using the hologram technique was highly curious. He said that its purpose was to cut out the background noise (e.g. from the crowd in Grant Park) that prevented the interviewer and interviewee from hearing each other clearly.
Now, take a moment to think about that explanation. Why would the use of a hologram (as opposed to a conventional 'on screen' interview) make any different whatsoever to the sound?
I have a soft spot for CNN. But this really was a classic case of a network assuming that its viewers were severely stupid.

in Lieberman reportedly unhappy with Reid's offer, flirting with GOP on The One Blog
To be honest, I don't really care whether or not he stays in the caucus. But I do care about his committee chairmanship. After all the negative attacks he made against Obama during the campaign, it would be absurd for him to be allowed to retain subpoena power over the White House.

Hmm. I'd be interested to know why you think John Kerry was a dishonorable candidate.

Jazz is exactly right re Kerry's Senate testimony, although Kerry wasn't just attesting to "atrocities that he had seen," but in fact many that he hadn't, since Kerry effectively slimed every one of his fellow servicemen in Vietnam as a bunch of "Gengis Kahns." Having thus made a name for himself, he then had the audacity to show up for his party's convention some 30 years later as "reporting for duty," presumably thinking that none of his fellow vets would remember what he said about them. My father, himself a Vietnam vet, almost fell out of his chair watching that. I always said that I wish there was a measure of how many Vietnam vets voted for Kerry vs those who didn't. My guess is the latter number would be far, far greater than the former. Jazz is right: Dishonorable. As it gets.

in FiveThirtyEight: "Essentially all relevant electoral scenarios involve some combination of ... Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Nevada" on The One Blog
Somewhat off topic:
Hilariously, Zogby's day-by-day tracking numbers have veered from a McCain lead of 1 point yesterday to an Obama lead of 10 points today. (Funnily enough, there doesn't seem to be a siren on Drudge for today's numbers...).
And as if to underscore his growing credibility problem, Zogby also takes a pop at Nate Silver in his latest update.

Me neither. It was certainly a colorful metaphor.
I have to say that I do not consider Pope JP II to have been a great man (and certainly not a great thinker), but I know many would disagree with me on that score - including you, evidendly - so I won't attempt to argue my case here.
Have a good night.

Technically, that is not necessarily an insult. Karol Wotyja is such a great man, one of the greatest of the 20th and 21st century, that I have to admit I am in as much or worse position.
For me though these great thinkers would spring out of my external nose hairs. I never suffered from the backne.

I seem to remember that Pope JP II attributed his survival of an assassination attempt to divine intervention by "Our Lady of Fatima." (Apparently the team of surgeons that operated on him for hours had little to do with it).

Yes, that was quite odd of him to give no credit to the human and worldly instruments.

Likewise, I reserve the right to point out that your arguments are hysterical and have no basis in reality.

rational basis review. The Supreme Court has reserved jurisdiction to invalidate laws that in its perception do not have a rational basis. Obama will determine the new character of the Court, so there will be no force of law to protect dissenters from legal and social ("racism racism racism!") marginalization. Also liberals are going to bring back that Fairness Doctrine to silence (at least in part) the voice against them in Talk Radio,
Any idea of freedom that we agree upon is dying, friend.
When 35 years of political progress for women (leaving room for abandonment of paternalistic federal control), and increase in viability for unborn children, and the public is made aware of the profiteering of the abortionist industry as well as the perceptible humanity of the gestating fetus through high def fetal photos . . . With all this to inform their conscience, and thousands of children are tossed to the slaughter each day, and voters and politicians still support a platform of abortion on demand. This my friend, shows that we long ago, at some time unknown, hit the high water mark of human civilization. Perhaps it was when George W. Bush maintained his opposition to embryonic stem cell funding against popular demand, or when he signed the Partial Birth Abortion Ban. Who knows. It was surely over when we forced Terri Shiavo to starve and deyhdrate to death (Obama's favorite legislative accomplishment, and one he wishes he had done more to expedite). But we turned our backs on the path to reform, and our Death is imminent. May it be faster than unneccessary pain, but slow enough to permit sharp witted fool to repent of his political crimes against humanity in that moment of abject humilation.

Exactly.
Craig - the irrationality that I was referring to was not the mere fact that you oppose Obama. Rather, it was your hopelessly hyperbolic description of what a vote for Obama represents. You know, stuff like:
"The people sold their souls and their incredulity. Children to the slaughter in holocaust for hollow physical liberties," etc, etc.
Reality check: In both international and historical terms, both McCain and Obama are moderates.
You're right about one thing though: As an atheist, I don't tend to spend much time contemplating the prospect of God's wrath.

See this is the scary thing about the enchanted Obama files. If every argument against his will does not pass the rule of reason, how long before such arguments have not the protection of the law. Change shall not be obstructed by unreasonable diversions. The electorate mandated change. The enemies of change must not prevail against it. The people have spoken.

You should really try your hand at writing melodramas, Craig. I think you'd be great, and you'd probably make a lot of money. That way, you could leave the political commentary to people who actually engage the rational part of their brains.

I thought I had arrived at my conclusions through the application of reason.
I thought it was reasonable to divine that Obama's running from his pro-abortion past in the Illinois Senate was total bullshit as many of his defenses are proven false.
I thought it was reasonable to suppose that Obama's defenses about his questionable associates were bullshit when his beachheads were repeatedly destroyed by facts forcing him to retreat further up the sand and proffer another.
I thought it reasonable to find Obama's withdrawl from his public financing commitment to evince a lack of integrity or autonomy.
I thought it reasonable to review Mr. Obama's experience and have concerns that he could not proffer one person who his decades of efforts lifted out of poverty.
I thought it reasonable to be concerned about the non-stop class warfare of the by the Obama campaign, attempting to exploit the saddened poor against the evil rich, actively shrouding the good that the wealthied class does for the needy irrespective of government force.
I thought it reasonable that a man so purportedly committed to transparency in government and honesty would not so constantly by misleading the public.
But I suppose I was the one full of shit. Having no redeeming value to my intellect, no signs of personhood distinct from the quiet late-term womb-dweller, I resign myself to being disposed of this world by the Democratic secularchy to come.

Good update. I love listening to Christian radio during election campaigns, as it's often pure comedy gold. Back in 2004, I vaguely remember one station imploring the Almighty to guide voters' hands as they pulled the lever.
I really don't understand why the LA Senate race isn't closer. Six months ago, I felt sure that the Republicans would flip it this time. Landrieu's net approval rating is only +10%, and a material percentage of those who voted for her in 2002 (when she only narrowly won the run-off) will have since left the state due to Katrina. I guess that the size of Landrieu's lead is the result of the generic polling advantage enjoyed by Democrats this year, plus the chronic underperformance of the aforementioned John Kennedy (a Democrat who was persuaded to switch parties to run against Landrieu).
But somewhat bizarrely, the NRSC is still investing in the race. Apparently David Vitter intervened when they threatened to pull out a couple of weeks ago (I guess he won't be on Elizabeth Dole's Christmas card list this year!). This has been a double digit race for months now, so it seems odd that – one week out – they still believe it to be a better investment than (for example) MN, OR, or NC.

I love it when the Loys move - it's entertaining for map geeks like me. You should keep doing this once a year!

The act gets to dishonorable when one considers the impact it would doubtlessly have had on his brothers-in-arms. Imagine if you had served on Kerry's swift boat, and one day you find your wife watching tv and saying "Hey...Alec...that guy you served with - John Kerry - is testifying that he saw men (fill in the blank with any atrocity). Was that....you?"
Dishonorable. As it gets.
I also said unappealing, that is based mainly on my assessment of his perpetually smug demeanor.
