That's what I thought when I pulled up your blog. I found it via my Technorati "gtd" search feed. As soon as I saw your header I thought "if the content is as good as this site looks, it's a keeper." Sure enough, you didn't disappoint. Then I looked in the sidebar and realized, b5 strikes again! I have toyed with modifications for my subscription system (big orange icon, w/ email option below). I'm curious what the "best practices" are as well.

Personally, I feel that regular blog readers probably have bookmarklets or other simple ways to subscribe to blogs they like. Thus, is any subscribe icon necessary?

Other users, who may not be familiar w/ RSS, probably would benefit from the icon & subscription invitation. Thus, how can we make it easiest for these people? Your solution seems pretty good. You educate people w/ your link & make it easy to subscribe to the user's reader of choice. I don't know what would be better.

Take care,
Andrew

Re: Increase RSS Feed Subscribers - Part I of Fine Tuning Your Blog

Ben,

I really think you're onto something about overwhelming new readers with too many options. If you're really new to RSS, you'll probably end up using a mainstream aggregator. People on the web are lazy a lot of times, and if they can't find what they need/want in a few seconds, they'll move on.

You're absolutely right about contact details, too. I have gotten quite a few emails and Skype calls, just by encouraging contact and making it obvious how to do so. In fact, I think I might make it more obvious. What good is an online presence if people can't connect to you in person?

Take care,
Andrew

Re: Small Boxes 20 - Snow Day

Chris,

Great video! I used to obsess over having my unread count at 0. It's been incredibly freeing to just let it say "100+" all the time. I know there's lots of stuff I haven't read in there. Just because I don't read it during one feed-sitting, that doesn't mean I won't read it later.

Plus, this way you can use Trends to see what you're actually reading. Then you can unsubscribe to feeds that never get consumed.

Great article!
Andrew

Re: Tinkering in the Open

Hey Chris,

Thanks a bunch for the link. We've just started looking for our first house. The market here in the Fredericksburg, VA area is full of foreclosures and short sales. Our Realtor explained that short sales are difficult, but now I understand a bit more. Thanks!

The funny thing is that another Realtor I know thinks short sales are a great way to buy a house. To each his own, I guess.

Re: Electronic Signatures and Silly Counter Offers

Awesome post! I use EchoSign in my law practice. It works like a charm every time, and the documents are crisp and easy to read. The coolest feature is that all parties automatically get a final version of the document emailed to them, after all signatures are in place.

Although some people still ask that I fax things for them to sign on paper. It's always important for consumers to know their rights in contracts and how to get out of them if necessary.

I suspect that it's actually pretty easy for someone to get out of Buyer Broker Agreement. Just thinking about the law of brokers, I don't think a contract would actually be enforceable if it didn't provide a way for the buyer to get out of it. Now if the buyer ends up purchasing a property that the original broker originally showed him, that obviously causes difficult questions about who gets compensated.

Re: Honey I Blew Up the Blog

I actually really like this theme. I tried it out a while back as a solution to the collaboration needs for the Journal I'm on at law school. What turned me off was the formatting (or lack thereof) for the document. It seems to handle the content perfectly, but I was worried about being able to apply and maintain the correct styles to the documents themselves. Specifically, I didn't see how footnotes would work properly, nor how there could be defined "pages" for a Table of Contents reference. I'm curious how your test goes.

Re: Greatest American Lawyer — Working from a Home Office

Great post! I really identify with point #5 about impressing your clients. Before law school, I put myself through undergrad doing internet programming from home. This meant that I was almost always available for the company and its partners, providing really quick turnaround on important issues. We worked with some companies in Japan, so they would be using our online applications in the middle of the U.S. night. A few times I lucked out and was available when something went wrong, so the foreign partners got help immediately. Impressive for company relations!

Re: Lawyer Blogger Quits Job, goes Bollywood

Wow, that hurts.
