in Blink Changed My Perspective on Kyle Hepp
Robespierre - funny story.

I have to say that I am guilty of not understanding people due to language expectations as well. It happens to me all the time. And it might have nothing to do with the speaker. For instance after listening to my Mandarin CDs on my way home from work, I'll hear something/someone and my brain can't process it because it is still thinking in Mandarin. This is just an example. This happens to me all the time. I don't comprehend until I figure out what language is being spoken.

My favorite story is when I was in Mexico w/some dealers and we were at a restaurant. I was sort of paranoid about ordering and so was relieved after my turn was over. I can't remember what I got, but I got quite a laught because when dinners were served mine was exactly what I ordered but the dealer principal (native Mexican)was presented with a baked potato. The waiter heard him order "papa al horno" but what he really asked for was "pavo al horno" (baked turkey).

in Overcoming Homesickness While Living Abroad on Kyle Hepp
Home IS where the heart is, not where it might long to be.

The biggest mistake I made was when we moved once due to my husband's job. We were told it was a temporary situation; about a year and then we would be transferred again. So I hestitated to get involved in anything, thinking we would just be moving on soon anyway so why bother. Then we ended up being there for 3 years. It was like 3 years of being in limbo. After that experience I vowed that wherever life took me I would never act like it was going to be just a temporary thing and would engage myself in the people and my surroundings; sieze the day, the month, the years!

in General Musings on Kyle Hepp
"And as soon as I start blogging for another person about a topic that interests me that sort of sucks the fun out of it anyways" - I can relate to this statement so much. As you know I'm a decent seamstress and many people have suggested that I do that for a living or at making extra cash. But for me the fun sewing is picking out the pattern and fabric combination, envisioning the end result, working on the garment until it fits just right. The minute I even think about "having" to sew as a job I just shudder to think about it. Having to do it for someone else and for their tastes would totally take the fun right out of it.

P.S. - I agree with your other readers. I'm sorry you lost some income but it will make more time for your photog passion so maybe it's just another door opening.

@ Amanda and Mamacita - do you think the distrust might be a gender thing, not a culture thing? In general I think men are more distrustful and women give people a little more benefit of the doubt but that question could lead to an entirely different blog post I suppose.

Congratulations Kyle, the part about you and S. missing each other cracked me up. And yes, that was TMI, but funny (too read about it, not to experience it I'm sure.)

When I started reading this I thought "wow, doesn't she know this is a really old joke" but then when I read on I saw how embellished it was from the original. I laughed out loud too at the Italian part. Is it because we are related that we think the same things are funny?

Yeah, just don't get too burned out pushing yourself so hard, O.K? But I also know you know how to stop and smell the roses. Remember when after you had pushed yourself soooooo hard in high school and were in your first semester of college that you said to me "I worked too hard in high school, I think I just have fun now?" !!!!!!

in Where Should We Move? on Kyle Hepp
fned - you are a 100% yourself though! Don't divide that 100% 50/50 between Mex / American. Spread your 100% over both halves!!

When I was 23 my husband and I got transferred to a different city. We were told it was a temporary move, that we'd only be there for 6 months. So I made the mistake of not getting involved because I thought I was in temporary quarters. We ended up being there for 3 years. So I vowed that I would never make that mistake again so every move after that I made with a completely different mindset and tried to embrace the new places no holds barred.

I certainly understand that itch to go places and do things but I think there needs to be a healthy balance between wanting more out of life and making plans to do more but making the most out of where you are under the present circumstance.

in Young Voters Snubbed as Dem Convention Delegates on The Colorado Independent
excerpt from: "Let's pray and work for peace..." by Rita Walpole Ague, April, 2008, Colorado Springs, CO, All Rights Reserved   "The city of Colorado Springs is the home of one of the world's  largest military/industrial ("Masters of Space") and spook-laden complexes.  No big surprise, the city never offered an apology to the peace marchers [St. Patrick's Day Parade, 2007] or to Elizabeth [Elizabeth Fineran, the older, disabled who was tripped and dragged in the street until road burned and bloodied] before she died.  No did the city offer an apology to the peace demonstrators it tear-gassed immediately before the war in Iraq began.  Only one other country in the world, Greece, gassed its peaceful demonstrators who gathered in the protest of the U.S. entry into the now infamous war.

Instead of mending its ways, Colorado Springs continues on its path of allowing no waves to be made, and no voice of dissent to be raised effectively.  De facto segregation exists in the poorly performing public schools.  Spousal and child abuse abounds.  State rankings of forty-seventh and forty-eighth in the nation as to provision for the developmentally disabled and the mentally ill are confirmed with gusto here in the shadow of magnificent Pikes Peak.  And 'slave labor', in the form of women brought here from the islands to work in the area's elegant hotels and motels, goes unnoticed and unmentioned in this anti-union, "America the Beautiful" city.

Delegates and alternates, elected to go to a Democratic county assembly held in February, 2008, stood outside in the bitter cold, some of them for hours.  They were intimidated and turned away from the assembly in number.  Their complaints went nowhere.  And the state Democratic convention in May, 2008, scheduled to be held at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, looms like a larger repeat of the earlier anti-war protest right before the start of the war.  Police are ordered, armed, and ready, and no effective (within "shouting distance") protesting will be allowed on site.  The list of sins goes on and on in this overtly neo-con, 'Christian' heaven."

So, elected delegates and alternates, and peace demonstrators, hope for the best but prepare for the worst when coming to the Democratic state state convention in Colorado Springs (a.k.a. "Naziville").
