in Topspin Media to music labels: drop dead on VentureBeat
My CD and my website cost me a lot of $$ to create, plus countless hours of work -- I make a living by selling my music -- no one should expect to have my music for free -- and no one should buy it and then give it to others for free -- it's stealing, plain and simple -- but because it's so easy to do, some people can't resist the temptation ... or they try to somehow justify it -- well, you can't go into a store, buy one item and expect to walk out with more items for free -- I wonder how these same people would feel it they worked hard at their job all week, but then their employer refused to give them their paycheck -- yep, I really wonder how they'd feel about that!

in 2008/06/26/piracy-joss-stone/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
it cost me $20,000 to make my CD at home plus countless hours of really hard work -- I'm not performing live -- I own my music and I am putting it out for "sale" -- I don't walk into a store and buy one item and expect to walk out with a second or third one for free -- the only reason sharing exists is because people can get away with getting something and NOT PAYING -- it's just too easy and people justify it and ignore the reality of what they're doing -- Joss Stone selfishly made these comments and is irresponsibly promoting an immoral and illegal practice -- I'd like to see her say that the seats at her concerts will be given out for free -- but no ... we don't hear her saying that! She is entitled to her point of view but she she should have taken into account what a big issue this is and how her comments are promoting something that is hurting other people. People who own a product can sell it any way they want, for whatever price they want, on whatever terms they want ... but THEY own it -- and anyone who starts sharing it illegally is a thief, plain and simple

in Joss Stone: “Music should be shared” on Mathew's comments
pls don't encourage this -- she can't speak for everyone -- I've spent $20,000 making my CD at home and now I'm selling it -- I'm not performing in big concert arenas and making tons of money -- it's hard enough to get people to stop sharing/stealing music -- and now a big star making these comments will make it even harder -- people want to use every excuse to justify it -- bottom line: you can't go into a store, buy one item and expect to walk out with a second one for free -- it's stealing, plain and simple -- it's irresponsible and reckless for her to speak for all musicians - especially when she is very wealthy and successful and the rest of us are not in the same boat

mathewi Thanks for the comment, Helen. I realize that not everyone can be as
successful as Joss Stone, and her comments may stem -- at least in
part -- from being financially well off. But I still believe that for
many artists, resting all of your hopes on CD sales is probably not
wise (if it ever was) and not just because of file-sharing. If
anything, I think that having people swapping your songs can
*increase* your chances of becoming successful, rather than the
opposite.
