in Album Review: Death Magnetic on Consequence of Sound
I agree with the article except for to comments on Unforgiven III. I believe the song exemplifies their ability to be diverse in their song writing abilities. It fits in very well with the other Unforgivens, and is a lyrical masterpiece. Again, Metallica shows us that they write music that they like. I respect that.
On top of that, I just like the song. The begining brings me back to the S&M CD. And like all of Metallica's greatist songs it has the unparalleled ability to calm me down and pump me up at the same time.
Great job MetallicA!!

Getting Kotchman was great. But the braves should have got more than just marek. They needed a better prospect.

in Why Should Readers Care about the European Wine Blogger Conference? on Catavino
Just reading through your site and I have to say it's full of great content. I've been an avid consumer of Spanish wines for a while now, and in the process of planting some rare Spanish varieties (rare at least in Australia). Also the blogging conference seems a great initiative. I have one of the few wine blogs in Australia (few relative to the rest of the world). Will be sure to track you down when in Spain next.

Totally agree. While there are some exceptions (Shakesville, for example), the silence is on the whole quite deafening. And, while I know it shouldn't be, it's surprising too. And most of all, disappointing.

in What Do You Want To See At JJP? on Jack and Jill Politics
What everybody else said ...
MOST: the high quality of posting and discussion, and the range of perspectives.
LEAST:
1) stuff doesn't post well on Facebook -- the excerpts and the graphics aren't great. [Getting off blogger and minor cleanups in the template should help here.]
2) like a lot of sites in the blogosphere, it's hard to have a long-term conversation about a topic that warrants thinking and slower responses.
How much do you want to grow the site? Adding Daily Kos-style "diaries" (and PMs) and community moderation can let things scale quite a lot. It's a different model though.

in How Obama Won: That $10,000/year job pays dividends on Jack and Jill Politics
Thanks, rikyrah, for the excellent post, and to everybody for great comments all. As somebody who wasn't familiar with Chicago community activism history and the background about Harold Washington's victory, I've really benefitted from (and enjoyed!) getting a clearer understanding of its influence over the last several months. And very interesting points about the potential dangers of Alinksy-style organizing.
It has been at the foundation of his calling for crossover voters. It was routinely sneered at by the MSM and Political Professionals....
And for quite a while it was routinely sneered at by a lot of the "progressive" blogosphere, even those who should have understood it -- in fact, even now there's a lot of antipathy to Obama's transpartisan appeal, and a lot of people who still don't get the impact of the engagement of youth (and everybody else). It's a very interesting collective blind spot.

in Minority Bloggers Need to Be Present at the DNC Convention on Jack and Jill Politics
I'm really glad to see this finally getting some MSM coverage -- and continue to be disappointed by the total lack of coverage of this in the "mainstream" blogosphere.
Agreed that there are some potential solutions here, especially since it seems like some credential sharing is possible. The task force idea is a very good one; and it is worth thinking about whether somebody could be convinced to purchase a couple of additional credentials. Hey, maybe the DNCC will kick in?

in Facebook and the Coming Revolution in the Middle East and Africa on Jack and Jill Politics
Thanks for the recommendation, Jill. I was in a non-political discussion forum where a Greek classics professor flipped out and lost it on somebody who discussed Cleopatra as African, and the intensity of the reaction really surprised me, so it'll be interesting to understand the history and how its biased the discipline.
In terms of about Facebook and the coming revolution ... I think a couple of things the skeptics are overlooking is how much more effective Facebook potentially makes the relatively small percentage of people who have access to the technology (the online/offline coupling you're talking about), the rate at which mobile phones and other approaches are increasing penetration, and how international networks like Facebook make it much easier for overseas/emigre allies to work with the activists at home.
Governments resisting change are right to be scared. The anti-FARC protests in Columbia went from a Facebook group and application to millions of people in the streets in only a month or so. And we're just learning how to use these technologies.

Great post, Rikyrah; it's a prime opportunity to change the media narrative. I posted Al's article and your DIGGing/blogging suggestion in the One Million Strong for Barack group on Facebook ... hopefully it'll catch people's attention.
[If anybody gets a chance, please bump the Facebook thread from time to time -- things move pretty quickly there and it's best to keep it on the front page.]

sometimes it's just time for a break ... i hope you feel better physically soon -- getting away from the stress will certainly help -- and that you find ways to use your blogging time and energy that you find both productive and enjoyable. i tend to agree that there's not much more to say about the nomination process at this point; and the larger problems -- food, energy, the economy -- aren't going away so a change of focus could be good!

in Obama & The Right Wing: Is it All About Race, Or Not? on Jack and Jill Politics
An interesting related article by Kate Sheppard on AlterNet: Are Evangelical Voters Abandoning the Republican Establishment?
One factoid: A new survey released last month by the Barna Group, the country's leading evangelical polling group, found that 40 percent of all "born again" adults who plan to vote in November said they would choose a Democratic candidate, while just 29 percent said they would vote for a Republican.

in I need a catchy name for my networking group of women who are part of direct sales/home businesses. Thanks!? on Direct Sales Marketing Queen- Nancy Sutherland
You could go with something a little more boring like:
Alliance of Professional Women
Alliance of Businesswomen
Association of Saleswomen and Business Owners
Association of Female Small Business Owners
But my favorite is:
AssoSHEation (you don't have to capitalize she, it was just for effect). It's professional, powerful and forward thinking.

in Smears Working? 13 Percent Of Voters Believe Obama Is A Muslim (Updated) on Jack and Jill Politics
Excellent analysis, thanks Jack. I guess in a country where for quite a while the majority of people thought that Saddam was responsible for 9/11, it shouldn't be surprising that 20% of those moving from "don't know" get it wrong ... it's still depressing.
