in What An Executive Blog Editor Needs to Know on Chris Brogan
I agree mostly with the point about great content. However, far too many people will take that too far and never post anything, because it's never perfect. Something is better than nothing in many cases.

in What I Don't Miss About Cable TV on tara lamberson
We got rid of cable a long time ago. Best decision. It's so easy to waste tons of time on cable. Not to mention the monthly bill adds up quickly. I personally try to avoid all reoccurring monthly costs. They just sit there and eat at you every month and never stop.

in Keep Your WordPress Blog Fresh With Content From Twitter and FriendFeed on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
I use Twitter tools (http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress) to do this. I just added it a few days ago and I agree that it seems like a good way to keep my blog fresh and utilize my Tweets for something of value. We'll see how my readers respond. Especially when I have a huge day of tweets.

Alex Schleber I tried this too for a while, but it was just too disjointed to be of real value to people. And to import from FriendFeed in the way described (a sidebar widget has been doable for a long time) doesn't seem to help much. Especially since the majority of FF content still comes from Twitter.

Nonetheless, figuring out ways to make all sorts of Social Media activity, that, while useful and increasingly inevitable/necessary, does take time away from writing "old-fashioned" blog posts, is a key concern:

For a while I played with the idea of adjusting Twitter Tools "Digest" feature to create more intelligent short posts on the fly using hashtags (e.g. #s for start, #e for end, #t for title, etc.), but the reality is that moost of your Twitter followers would not take too well to such extended soliloquy.

So the problem remains, one idea I have seen is the integration of a mini-blog like Tumblr or Posterous into the main blog as shown in this example http://longtail.com under "Tidbits". Pretty smart, and I might try this out myself.

One thing that greatly disappointed me as Google's recent announcement that they were shuttering GoogleNotebooks for the most part. In my view a big mistake, since some version of this form of quick capture (some of the other similar bookmarklets tend to be somewhat slow by comparison) if integrated more fully with other properties (Blogger comes to mind...), could have stolen the show.

So I'd say the race for the ideal short/rapid publishing platform is still on. Twitter and FriendFeed mentions seem from their length constraints more apt to be used as a form of commenting, as in the "social comments" system you guys just launched.

I think RedBox is a huge competitor with Blockbuster. I've forgotten that it even exists. $1 for weekend entertainment is the best.

in Reflections of a Y Combinator Dropout: Introduction on Orian Marx's Blog
I really appreciated reading your comments and insight. Well written and very insightful.

The only observation I'd make is that it seemed like you had great insights about what your partners did wrong and not as many insights in what you did wrong (other than managing your partners improperly). I'd love to see a similar post like this from your partners to round out the discussion. Not trying to be critical, but just thought it might be worth mentioning to you.

Thanks again for being as open and honest as you have been.

in Rumor from the news doldrums of August: Mormon church trying to buy Facebook on VentureBeat
Seems like a simple twitter could have quelled this rumor. Any mormon could easily see that the church would never buy Facebook. At least not while it has so many pictures of half naked co-eds and so many pictures/applications associated with alcohol.

All of that said, the idea still made me laugh. I honestly assumed that it was a comedy when one of the sources was Zach Klein, employed at comedy site CollegeHumor. I was just surprised the story was on VentureBeat and not CollegeHumor.

in How fast is your Internet connection? on Ted Murphy
10.5-22 Mbps Download and 2.5-2.8 Upload. I pay around $50 a month (no discount since I don't have Cable TV either) with Cox. I think you know I'm in Vegas. I've always found my connection to be faster than most around the country. I find this amazing since there's very little competition with internet providers in Las Vegas.

in The Weird Economics of Information on Union Square Ventures
Sharing an idea rarely is able to share enough passion with someone to have them steal your idea. The feedback you get is great, but those hearing your idea will almost always end with a standard "that's a great idea." That response is much different than, "I want to fund that idea" or "I want to help you build that idea" or "I want to steal that idea." These last 3 responses usually come once you've had some visible success and even then it's more rare than we'd all like.

Scoble,
When you said you're not paid by Wordpress, do you actually pay wordpress to be a VIP? Same question for Kyte and Qik. Did they give you a free Nokia phone? If they did, then shouldn't you disclose that too?

in The secret to Twitter on Scobleizer
I'm a convert (Twittered a couple days ago): http://twitter.com/techguy/statuses/775284905

What do you think of the concept of twitter "groups"? Essentially a way to filter your twitter friends in to groups of people from certain topic areas/relationships/etc.

Close friends I want to read all their twitters. Tech people and VC people may be another group that I read regularly as needed. Sure I could create two accounts, but that's no fun to manage.

in The Audience Prompter on A VC
I agree that a back screen is a bad idea. I saw it at a number of conferences and it really distracts from the flow of people on stage. Certainly it is great entertainment for those in the audience when there is a less than insightful speaker, but I think it really kills the flow.

in Some More Thoughts On Pro Bloggers on A VC
I agree with you that this is the power and the nature of blogging. I created a post on my blog that was publicizing a friend's blog and making harsh suggestions on what he could do better. I did it all tongue and cheek and my main reason for doing it on my blog was to promote his site and share the internet's currency: links with him.

Turns out I caused quite the stir with my harsh commentary. I would have done it a bit different next time, but I was surprised how sensitive he was.

I thought your comments were very interesting and not condescending to Erick at all. I had read Erick's post before I read yours and appreciated a second point of view on his post. If anything I think that the bloggers you pointed out will think twice about the points you've made and ensure they've gotten as much information as possible before posting.

Thanks for bringing up difficult subjects.
