Ah yes, the infamous Julio Geordio if I remember his name correctly. He was one of my favourite Paul Whitehouse characters.

in What did you expect when you were expecting? on Life is grand
I couldn't agree more and actually believe that it doesn't matter what anyone tells you before becoming a parent, it still will not prepare you for the difference it will make in your life. In fact I recommend steering all such conversations away from the subject as everyone's experience (and outlook) will be different.
I once heard someone say that, "the greatest gift you can ever give a child is your time" and 4 years along that road, I can only but agree 100%. Parenting is what it is, it is what you make it and you will never look back my friend!

in Sky HD? on Life is grand
I wouldn't think the HD is worth it yet as most of the HD channels tend to be pay-per-view anyway. However, by all accounts the Sky+ certainly is worth getting. A number of colleagues have Sky+ and rave about it constantly. That has also come down a lot in price too.
Also, if it's good enough for Parkie, they must be doing something right!

Fantastic news. I'm thrilled for you both and delighted to hear the first scan went well. I'm sure you will both make great parents!

Fortunately, you had a little warning some weeks ago and were able to take measures to prevent data loss.
It seems that, no matter what they do, the manufacturers of hard disks are always up against it as the increases in speed and capacity have to introduce some element of risk along the way.
You are correct though, it should not have failed after just one year - most disk drives have a far higher MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) than that. But then again, someone has to fall within the unluck spikes of those graphs too.

I agree about the .io TLD becoming hot property and the 55 words ending in "io" listed here (http://www.morewords.com/ends-with/io) won't last long.

I've had a Canon Digital IXUS V for nearly five years now and can totally recommend the IXUS range. During the same time, many friends of mine have since replaced their first attempt with an IXUS and have not been found wanting.
Admittedly, the IXUS V is very dated now though (both in terms of physical size and specification (2MP, 2X zoom)) and I am looking to replace it. When I do, it will certainly be with another from the IXUS range. The 750 had caught my eye recently and was great value at €249.00 from eXpansys.

Yes, it would appear that the latest Spiderman movie is somewhat of a bridge too far. I haven't seen it yet but have heard many similar reviews to yours.
On a positive note, I am also a big fan of the Dungarvan Cinema for mostly the same reasons as you have outlined. If they ever finish the new complex in Railway Square, we will have a new cinema in Waterford.

in Irish Elections on Life is grand
Unfortunately, this is all too typical of modern Ireland. It beats me why they have reverted to a Thursday. After all, they held the elections on a Friday some years back so that people who lived away from home (students, graduates and those who never transferred their viote) would have a realistic opportunity to get home in time to vote.

This is a truly outstanding piece of editing and captures the scene from the movie so brilliantly. It actually makes me want to watch the movie again as I haven't seen it for a while.

I have to agree. I too found myself spending far too long in JSP/Spring hell when all I wanted to do was make some trivial changes to a web page. It is true that this is new technology to me and maybe it will take a little more time to learn to appreciate the upside (if there is one) but I'm not getting that warm-and-fuzzy feeling ...
First impressions last ... and quite frankly, I ain't impressed!

in Buying a house in Ireland as a foreigner on Life is grand
Hmm, you'd have thought in the current climate that they'd be falling over themselves to load you the money. I have come across this problem before when a non-Irish neighbour of mine wanted to do the same. However, he seemed to think he only needed to be living here 1 year instead of 4.
I might be worth contacting the Financial Regulator of some department therein. Isn't there an ad on the TV at present promoting some branch of the Financial Regulator, things explained in plain English etc. www.itsyourmoney.ie ???

in Outback fun on Life is grand
A friend of mine has had a Subaru Forester for several years and reckons it is by far the best car he has ever owned.
He was recently looking at trading up to a newer model but found that the engine size had increased to something like 2.5 or 2.8 litre and felt that was a little too much for his needs. So, maybe you should consider the older model for some added practicality.
Combined with your photo, it looks like it might be a safe bet though.

I'm hearing some rumblings too that a similar problem exists with J2ME code coverage tools. Apparently, there is an extension to Cobertura but it does not work correctly (yet).

I agree completely. The notion of having to enter a different URL for a website depending on the viewing device is just plain silly. It would put me off using that website to be honest and I know of several others that would not be impressed either. If the mobile technology is going to succeed in the real world, the will have to address issues like this.
