in A good treadmill run! on Go the Distance
I got a refurbished 2nd gen shuffle from Apple for $40. The newest shuffle has the controls on the earbud cord and I don't use their headphones so I wouldn't be able to use it.
I think it's great; I load it up with all running music and then I don't miss not having a screen at all - I know whatever comes up will be good. It's definitely better for me than lugging around my iPhone - I don't know if it would be that much of an improvement over a nano.

in How you know you’re a derby girl on Go the Distance
well.. I AM a bit sore!
I was in a car accident the week before my first marathon - my knee bumped the steeringwheel and I hit my head on the rear view mirror. THAT one, I was nervous about because it was my first. Now? I guess I didn't really even think about it.
Next Thursday is "test-ups" - a physical test to see if I'm good enough at derby to get placed on a team and participate in scrimmages. I'm more concerned that my marathon will impact my derby!

right, and your actual advice was "increase mileage" - which is definitely hard to do when it takes you a long time to get the miles in b/c you're going slow! Still, I've taken your advice in the way that works best for me - just getting myself back into the habit again.

Absolutely. I love to see that you are getting back in the habit. My run today was 8 miles and it took me well over an hour. My goal is to run for my lifetime. It has been my experience that most runners tend to abuse themselves with detrimental workouts that are run to often and / or to hard. Diminishing returns seem to only lead them to the false belief that they are not doing enough intense workouts. The whole cycle tends to lead them to a shortened running career and a dislike for the sport. I am hopeful for you and also excited that you are finding and taking the time. I think you might surprise yourself. RUN MORE!

in Colorado Races on Go the Distance
I’ll be honest, I really prefer the marathon distance to anything else. A few years ago I was sponsored by a team to run their shorter distance runs, and I never really did well, b/c I’d rather go for the longer distances.
And I HAVE done three-in-three-weeks and three-in-four-weeks, so yeah… a marathon every two weeks seems to make total sense! ;-)

I like red wine. Anything else is hearsay and should be regarded with a some hooey and humbug. Speaking of red wine......when are you back in OH-IO so we can have a few more sips of magic running elixir together with Helen?

in Free Twitter SMS alerts in the UK return thanks to Wadja on blog till you drop!
I'm afraid I don't know much about the handset usage in the UK - is it possible that people are still using twitter via applications on their handsets? Since I got my iphone, I don't use the SMS features of twitter at all.

I actually tried out the week BEFORE the marathon, which really concerned me more (I couldn't afford to get injured!)

I agree completely! My own guide is the 8 mile marker: at 8 miles, I should barely be aware that I'm running, I should be mentally and physically fresh.

thanks Bridget! However, it's not really any better than I did in Chicago 3 years ago. I don't think the altitude has really had much effect.
How are you??

the most annoying part is that now that I think about it, I run negative splits in my PR races, so being a second behind at 20 really isn't a big deal. So now I'm frustrated that I 'gave up' too soon! :)

in December 2008 Monthly Mileage; 2008 Recap on Go the Distance
Odd… I thought I responded earlier?
I decided that I wanted to move out of Ohio, so I started looking out in the Pacific Northwest: Oregon, Washington State.. then I found this great job opportunity in Colorado and I figured that would satisfy a few personal goals :)

Oh no, I mean I thought I responded to this post, but it isn’t showing up.
I moved to Ohio in 01 from Western Canada, and then to Colorado in 08, so I’ve had a few big moves. It’s kinda hard to settle in, but ah well..

in How one blog comment can bring you 230+ unique visitors on How To Make My Blog
Many folks know they should be commenting on blogs, but it appears often the focus is on 'dofollow' links or commentluv. They forget that beyond simple PageRank, the goal should be to drive *people* to your site. An interesting comment will do that much more effectively than a dofollow comment that gets you some small slice of google-love.

Thanks for all comments!
@Andrea - Definitely. I do not care about dofollow or nofollow when commenting. It is more about branding, networking and building traffic.
@Steitiyeh - My avatar is the self-portrait I took of myself with my mobile phone and then edited with "cartoonish" layer on top. I believe all Nokia phones have some similar option in their photo editing. But also if you're using Mac, you can use Photo Booth to take pictures with lots of different effects like pop-art or cartoon stuff which do make great avatars.
