in My thoughts about the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music on Paul Jacobson
Hi Debra
Thanks for commenting. I have been hearing rave reviews recently and I hope to have a second chance to try the phone out. I must be missing something. My plan is to use it exclusively while I have it and post a follow-up.

in http://pauljacobson.org/2009/04/09/why-youre-wrong-about-friendfeed/ on Paul Jacobson
Hi Jennifer
You do make a good point. FriendFeed isn't for everyone. It is pretty simple to set up and the beta site looks a lot like Twitter so I think new users shouldn't be too overwhelmed. That being said, Twitter is popular for a good reason and people who prefer it or are comfortable on Twitter shouldn't change just because FriendFeed is there.

in Why Facebook has never listened and why it definitely won’t start now on Scobleizer
Robert, I believe that is progress (well, depending on your thoughts about the design). I didn't expect Facebook to backtrack and restore the previous design but I was hoping Facebook would add the features users have been asking for like the live stream and so on.

At the risk of sounding a little dull, are you saying that all of those social services integrate Disqus? Or are you saying that there is a tracking mechanism that tracks comments posted on those services without them actually running Disqus?

Google Maps 3.0 for mobile devices is available already. I just installed it on my Nokia E71. It looks good, although I haven't tried the friends list interface (need to add some friends first).

Thanks for the review. I am just about to get it from Audible to listen to on my iPod when I finish Outliers!

in Palm did what Nokia, RIM, and Microsoft couldn’t: build a better experience than Apple on Scobleizer
It is a beautiful device and the UI is very slick. I do wonder if it is too little too late for Palm or if they are truly "back" as their exec said in your Kyte video.

in Facebook bans breastfeeding on Paul Walsh, the Irish Opportunist
I think Facebook is taking this debate in the wrong direction. Women shouldn't be shamed for breast feeding, in public or otherwise, and that is the implication of its move to ban these photos.

in Bloggers vs Big Media is not the real debate on Paul Jacobson
Sorry Matt. I was happy to leave your response as is. I think I was gearing up for a discussion about the old blogger versus mainstream media debate. I do see the value of a form of gatekeeper in the media model (that probably wouldn't work in a blogger system) in the sense of a party that pretty much does quality control on the content that emanates from mainstream media (in contrast to blogger/social media).
Quality content seems to be rare far too often so taking steps to protect and facilitate that content should be encouraged.

in Restraint of trade agreements on Paul Jacobson
Yes, that is true and sometimes advisable for companies which face an exodus of staff to the competition. It can be expensive but if you have a company determined to squash unlawful competition this way, it can be an effective strategy.

in Restraint of trade agreements on Paul Jacobson
No, that would probably render it unreasonable and unenforceable.

in Bloggers vs Big Media is not the real debate on Paul Jacobson
Hi Pratish
You make a good point there. I suppose the potential for greater awareness of groups like bloggers on the Web is also a factor. We may find that in SA bloggers never really reach significant mainstream awareness mainly because the vast majority of Internet using South Africans won't be accessing the Web on a computer in the conventional sense but rather their mobile phones. The next question is whether bloggers or other online publishers can translate their offerings into a more mobile friendly option?
What is happening is that mainstream media is also changing its model to embrace publishers like bloggers and, at the same time, are establishing rich mobile offerings too. The latest that I am aware of is The Times' mobile service at http://m.thetimes.co.za which I believe was launched recently. Couple social media and mainstream media on a mobile platform and we could well go from tens of thousands of Internet users to millions of Internet users overnight when we reclassify what we mean by "Internet users".

in Quick Nokia rant on Paul Jacobson
I took a look at the video comments in Safari 3.2 and the control to play the video (the play icon) was actually placed above this post for some crazy reason so I didn't see a way to play the video. I wonder if this is a WP theme issue or a bug in the Seesmic plugin (either on its own or because of its integration with or alongside Disqus).

in SIPping from the VOIP fountain on Paul Jacobson
Hi there
I have installed Nimbuzz and I am testing it out from an IM
perspective. It seems pretty decent. I haven't tried voice services
using any of these services as yet so I haven't compared voice quality.
I only installed Gizmo when I posted about it so I don't know what it
was like before then. I am not very impressed with the Mac client
though (it just doesn't seem to be able to scan my contacts and import
other users).

in Nokia E71 on Paul Jacobson
I've been syncing my E71 with my Mac using iSync (you need to download a plugin/patch from the Nokia site for the E71 - just look on the site or search Google for something like "Nokia E71 iSync"). I am going to try connecting my phone to my MacBook via Bluetooth for tethered Internet access later today. Hopefully I can figure out where I was going wrong with the review model.

in Nokia E71 on the horizon on Paul Jacobson
I have been using my N73 for email, microblogging and web browsing quite a bit lately so I have been tending more towards a phone like this as opposed to something that is more media focussed. After using my iPod I'm not sure that I would migrate to a media capable phone that quickly. I'd rather move from my iPod 5th gen to an iPod Touch when they have more capacity than look at something like an N96 or whatever the big media N-series is.
My phone is my communication device, I have other devices for other stuff. Now when an iPhone (or even an Android phone) is released that does both jobs better, I'll reconsider, but that is a big decision considering the integration of my media on my Mac.

Thanks Jonathan. I am pretty keen on that phone after watching your video. It helps to see the camera in action to get a sense of how responsive it is (one of my issues with my N73). I am not too fussed about the headphone jack because I don't use my phone for music (I am practically surgically attached to my iPod). As for the autofocus, that is just odd. I thought autofocus was pretty much standard on these camera devices?

in Incoming Android on Simon Dingle
I am still a little ambivalent about Android although even this device is more useful to me than the iPhone in terms of functionality. Android and iPhone development paths will be a pretty interesting illustration of the relative effectiveness of an open sourced development and a completely closed development process.
