There have been plenty of cases where companies (individuals) will purposely spam links to a competitors website in order to dilute and ruin that website's value within the search results. This is more common in highly competitive verticals. I don't recall a specific example where paid links were used, but I'm sure this has been done.

I'd recommend buying your personal brand on AdWords as well, or else all your hard work in brand building within the natural search results can be trumped for a few pennies a click if your brand is of any significant value.

This is something I am personally very interested in and trying to get my company to adopt. I know for a fact that many social media marketers that work with large artists are going about marketing these artists in the wrong ways.

I like how this functions, but I do agree that this does give Facebook an OS type feel.

There has been times on Facebook where I find that I am engaging in a real-time wall conversation with people. I would much rather have a real-time IM conversation. This is one personal need that it will solve.

Other than that, there is Adium.

My best guess as to why the ad click through rates have tanked is because Google is likely kicking out many of the 'arbitrage' type advertisers in favor of premium advertisers. This will help eliminate click fraud, however, this would definitely cause a decrease in click through activity
