Great list of research to conduct and how to prepare for an interview.

As executive recruiters with over 1000 searches under our belts in 25 years, and interviews with over 100,000 candidates, I can suggest that even with all this preparation, most candidates still blow the interview itself.

The primary reason is that they do not practice their "stories" as you termed it. There's a specific structure to communicate a "story" in the interview to convey competency, skill, past accomplishment, and giving the hiring manager enough specifics to be able to predict your future performance.

We call this structure D.R.E.S.S.U.P. for phone interviewing, and learning how to S.W.E.A.R. in the face-to-face interview.

Most hiring managers have never been trained in how to conduct an effective interview. As a result the candidate, must take strong action in making sure their key points come across vs. passively letting the hiring manager as questions.

Both of these techniques for preparing interview answers have at their heart the idea you mention of "telling stories". What was the problem, what was your role, what was the impact, issues you ran into, budget, resources, other quantification, how you would do if differently, and questions to ask the hiring manager about comparable expectations.

Your interview preparation provides you with the information to structure your interview responses. However, it takes practice to be able to WOW the interviewer with a response. The good news is that these two techniques for phone interviewing and face to face interviewing can be used for any question.

Based on your experience and past comments you have received, I am curious of your opinion. I have a nearly five year old HLP4674W that has be terrific with only one bulb replacement to date. Today, the picture lost it's color - it now performs like an old black and white television. Picture is crisp and perfect, but no color. I would guess that this is the result of color wheel failure, but I would love your opinion. I did not hear grinding from the back of the set and the colors were absolutely fine earlier in the day, but now all video inputs are in black and white, including the TVs menu. There was also no degradation of color over time. The symptoms make me suspect some other cause besides the color wheel, and before I spend the money and time replacing the color wheel, I wanted to know what you thought. Thanks for your time.

As a loyal viewer of the Practice I was very dissapointed that the characters who made this show (Bobby, Helen, Lindsey)were not brought back. Why ruin such a successful show? The MPAA has another reason besides piracy for trying to stifle open-source DVD player projects: if I can modify the code of DVD player software, then I can disable other key DRM features like region codes and UOP (user operation prohibited) flags. That means they wouldn't be able to force me to wait until a DVD is released in my region before I buy it, and they wouldn't be able to force me to watch additional advertising or the already boringly ubiquitous FBI warning.

Note that neither of these DRM features have anything to do with piracy, yet they are still protected by the DMCA, wholly at the legitimate consumer's expense.

Solveig, there is only one difference that a legalized DeCSS would make: I'd be able to legally use DVD software that allows me to play the disc in any region I want to, or skip past advertisements and the old-and-tired FBI warning. I could even write such software myself, including the features I like and want - and I'd be able to make said DVD software available for free and under an open source license.

Every movie out there has already been pirated, legal DeCSS or not, and they're tremendously easy to find and download, legal DeCSS or not. Will not having to see the FBI warning one... more... time... really induce me to rip off movies? No, of course not. That's ludicrous. But it *does* mean one less avenue for the content industry to force-feed me advertising (notwithstanding the fact that I've already paid them my pound of flesh to watch the content I want to watch).

If you really want to talk about setting up reasonable boundaries, try talking to the content industry. They plead with Congress that DRM is the only way they're going to protect their investment, but when they get the legislation they ask for (DMCA), they can't help themselves but to sprinkle on a little extra "screw you" to the legitimate consumer. They add extra features that force advertising down our throats or impose autodeletion on legally recorded content; or they implement oppressive, buggy, and unsafe DRM schemes (furthermore, ones that ironically violate the licensing terms of open source software); or they implement their DRM without regard for early adopters of new technology. And yes, I have actual concrete examples I can provide of each of those "screw yous" that I just mentioned.

If the content industry could be trusted, then nobody would be complaining about DRM except the pirates. But the content industry is no more trustworthy than the pirates, for the reasons I've already described above, and what you're seeing from legitimate consumers like myself is the beginning of the backlash. My worry is that the backlash won't become mainstream until it's too late (that being when the technology infrastructure relies upon the content industry's chosen DRM scheme being implemented by the hardware).

How many competitors does Brazil's largest telecom have? How easy is it to switch from them to another service provider, and how much competition is there in the basic telephone service market? Are we talking broadband or dialup?

Those are key details that could make or break this story's importance in terms of network neutrality in the US, because if switching your ISP in Brazil is as easy as changing your socks, then sure, Brazil's largest telecom has something to worry about. But in the US, competition is minimal, as your choices for broadband are (a) your cable company and (b) your phone company, and both of those kinds of companies have a huge motivation to replace third-party VoIP or VoD services with their own offerings.

It is an interesting view you have. However, I remember that even the Web 1.0 very commercialized and captialistic back in the 90's. That is what the "dot com" boom was all about - making money off the internet.

I agree with you that many social networking sites use their services subversively to sell advertising. However Web 2.0 allows for a forum of 2 way communication. Just as you stated, "Web 1.0 is ‘read-only’" Web 2.0 allows for the exchange and update of ideas and information. It allows us to keep in touch with friends and family. It gives businesses a new outlet to promote and provide their services.

There will always going to be a commercialized aspect of the web, that is just the nature of the beast. It was there with Web 1.0 and it is here to stay with 2.0.

I, too, tried one of these and found the lack of gas, oil and noise wonderful. What I didn't like was the spotty job of cutting the grass. I switched to electric and while it is not the most treehuggerish it does a great job, came with a mulching attachement and is off instantly so not really wasting electricity. The cord can be a pain but it's way better than gas/oil.

I'd agree that automated backups/updates etc usually happen at night, but I'm sure power-saving can work around those times.

I notice that the sleep mode on my mac is a lot faster and more reliable than the equivalent on my PC, and hence I use it much more. I hope I'm saving some energy, but I dont know for sure...

Power consumption on some of the latest PCs (esp powerful graphics cards) is getting a bit much.

Sorry to rain on the "zero-emissions" dream folks, but according to the IPCC Special Report on Avaiation, CO2 is only a third of the greenhouse gas emissions from flying. Nitrous oxides and water vapour in it's many forms make up most of the rest. The nitrous oxides are formed when the two most common elements in the air, N and O, are subjected to high heat. And the water vapour shows up when you burn hydrogen in presence of oxygen.

So even if this Hyper-Hydrogen fantasy became reality it would still have massive GHG emissions. Per flight emissions would drop 33% perhaps but total flying emissions are growing 50% per decade worldwide and 10%-15% per year in asia. Flying emissions are up 100% since 1990 base year...and we all know we have to cut emissions big time from 1990 base levels.

So the gains from this multi-decade huge project would be wiped out in a few years of increasing flights. Ditto for bio-fuel nirvana in jets, where 20% bio-fuel = only 7% GHG reduction.

The future of flying is looking a lot like the past...much, much less per person. Plenty of other ways to have grand adventures. Get creative and plan your fun the old-school ways.

Greenwash alert: only 80 tonnes saved. Compare to their own sustainability report showing 30,000 tonnes from flying just 0.1% of members on "eco-adventures" each year. This flying is the single largest source of emissions for REI at about 30%. Worse, those flying emissions are increasing thousands of tonnes each year. I like REI, but this solar panel thing is trivial compared to the exploding climate damaging emissions from their hyper-luxury vacation biz. Let's call it what it is: classic greenwashing.

Personal bankruptcies are way up, in case you haven't heard, in this wonderful economy we have, and Mrs. Thompson's problems, uninsured medical expense, is on of the three big reasons. (The other two: divorce and unanticipated unemployment.)
