Perhaps you didn't look in the right areas for coffee.  I thought Austin had great coffee; certainly better than this over-done stuff in S.F.  Try Little City on Congress; Quackenbushes on 45th Street (I think). It used to be across the street from U.T. on Guadalupe.  Also, try Metro on Guadalupe.  It stays open all night.  Now, what does S.F. have to match that?  Oh yea, Carl's Jr; but, of course, if you're into hard drugs, you can always find your connection there.  Did I say that outloud?  In downtown Austin, there's Ruta Maya.
