in bob torres - Putting Vegan Freak on Amazons Kindle (or, this could beokay) on bob torres

Since I am a vegan also, your pub caught my eye. I have my Kindle, and really love it more and more each day. But one thing I thing would be good on it are cookbook recipies -- properly formatted for the Kindle of course. I hate to have big big cookbooks open next to me when cooking (or raw vegan style), and the Kindle does this job much better.

And I'm going to try as hard as I can to never buy an analog book again (I know I will fail, but i'm trying). I've got way too many. But I've also got a lot of ebooks on my hard drive, and I think I can put all of these on my Kindle, especially since I also have a 4 GB SDHC card installed, which gives me the capacity for thousands of books.

Incidentally, the Kindle is really really deep in features -- I have been studying everything I can find about it for a month, and using it for more than one week, but I seem to learn something new about it each and every day.

I'm also a writer, and love the idea that I can now get my writings published for free, no hassle, and receive 35% of all that people pay for them (if any do).

in Free books for the Kindle on Letter Never Sent
A nice Google trick I hadn't tried. There's no end to the depth of Google.
Also I really envy your transition to a minimalist. I am terribly burdend with material possessions I can't bear to just throw away, but would really like to see end up in the possession of someone who can appreciate them. I'm 82 years old now, and need to escape from my many too many years of accumulation for the sake of owning things, into the digital world of unlimited sstorage (perhaps on Google's hard drives?) of things I bought in physical form due to lack of other means of ownership. These include books, music, video, and who knows where this can go in the future.

in Reading between the lines of Jobs’ comments on Kindle, Android on last100
Since there's no dirty trick that I wouldn't believe Jobs capable of, I think this writer is right on. Jobs comments were intended to distract everyone until under great secreacy Jobs can announce an ebook reader at a time in the future of his choosing. No backlit computer will ever compete with the Kindle, which is infinately better to read, and has a huge battery life to go with it as well - something no portable computer can ever come close to.

His comment re reading being a lost art or cause is obviously plain stupid, and another lie to distract everyone from his real intention. Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO, obviously does not believe that, and has proven this to be wrong by becoming the largest bookstore in the world. And who better to produce the first ebook reader that will be hugely successful. I got mine on Dec. 4th, abslutely love it, and already have 72 books in my Kindle's memory.

This techno geek also really loves to read, and also loves his Kindle. I really hate all the pseudo-geeks who thinks they somehow are elevated in people's opinions if they trash it. But not me. It just makes me realize who they really are -- ignorant non-readers who have most likely never even seen a Kindle, never touched one and certainly never read using one.

I have been a heavy reader since childhood, and still do it as I have time. And with my Kindle, it is with me when I have a moment of time to keep reading no matter where I am.

Kindle was announced for sale and use in the US only. Personally, having traveled a lot throughout the world, I don't like that, but the two cellular networks they support -- primarily Sprint -- do not yet operate outside the US. But Amazon is not stupid, and for as many items as they can, they do sell in most major countries. Sprint is also not stupid, and as volume grows, they too will certainly expand. The problem with Sprint is that they do not use the worldwide GSM network protocol but use a US protocol, which is a bad mistake for worldwide coverage. But their network is very fast.

As for languages, it was a surprise to me, but they do support all (most?) languages whose written alphabet is based on Latin charaters. But there are many other languages -- Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Hindi, Arabic & Farsi, Greek & Russian, & others which are not yet included. It's taken three years to get what we have out so far, so they will need more time to get things like this out the door. But given the high success of this product so far, I am sure they will.
