So interestingly, I've been jonesing for a 3g but still can't quite get off the fence because of the extra data costs and the nagging concern about the battery life. I'm suffering as it is with the 2g's battery life, so I'd imagine hitting the breaking point with the 3g. Yet, I found myself near an Apple store this evening and felt compelled to drop in...but given an hour wait (a dozen people waiting outside to purchase and activate) and thoughts of your post...I went home instead =D

Unfortunately what can't be overlooked is the Apple culture and love for all that is Apple (hence the fever). Even if an Android phone was given away with every feasible bell and whistle, it'll have a tough time overcoming iPhone's momentum anytime soon. While I'm not a MAC user, I too am pretty enamored with my iPhone given it's incredible user interface and have been willing to overlook its various flaws...although the frustration is starting to mount. Still, until I can find the large screen-web surfing experience elsewhere I'll be drinking the Apple kool-aid (maybe I need to get out more).

Without a doubt, battery mgmt is an issue even on the 2g. The 2.01 code seemed to help with the hesitation/stuttering with application spawning and data entry...but I don't see any improvement re: battery usage (although not even sure if there was anything meant to address this as I had hoped). Overall, I think the enablement of the data push has cut the daily battery life to less than half of what I normally experienced...1-2 days on usage that consisted mostly of data via edge with wifi on occasion.
